Well done, Billy Bragg: "Would you refuse to let him in and send him back to die?"
Check out this incredible Christmas carol from Billy Bragg. Reminding us what the true story is - a refugee family escaping state violence and promising the gift of peace.

This is not just "a breach of ethics" - it's straight up willfull harm, leading to death, so I believe that's called manslaughter at the very least. What even is happening?
"Babies in the randomized, controlled trial will or will not receive the vaccine at birth...

"It is a breach of scientific ethics to withhold an intervention that has been proven safe and effective."

Beautiful reminder (as I had heard this before, but a long time ago). There is only one of each of us. Some have talent that can be shared publicly, to acclaim (or not), but ALL of us have our unique abilities and perspectives to share. Remember that!
Our work is craft! Take it seriously or find other work.
As told by the late dancer and choreographer Agnes DeMille.

A good read with important points - tldr: "We cannot indefinitely socialize climate damages while privatizing climate profits."
Excellent oped by Kiera Taylor: We’re sending BC’s extreme weather bills to the wrong people.

Costs for floods and fires are shifted onto residents and taxpayers while fossil fuel companies most responsible for driving disasters pocket profits

My good. Not surprising, but not good.
Read the study and think about population level implications, remembering that the vast majority of people have been infected multiple times.

What are the possible long-term neurological sequelae?

What are the implications for societies now?

It always blows my mind to read case studies out of Asia & realize that they are probably a decade ahead of public health in the West in terms of actually understanding respiratory disease transmission. Peak public health in the West seem to be don't test, don't tell.

NCAR is quite literally our global mothership.

Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources.

Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.

Unbelievable.

The tragedy of Rob and Michelle’s deaths are incomprehensible.

I’m hearing Rob’s voice telling us all to do more, to repair the human soul, to repair our hearts, to repair our country, to repair our world, to keep fighting, to keep living for every soul taken from this earth.

interesting! I certainly support public funds being exclusive to public education, which can/should then be well-funded and offer a variety of programs.

Never forget, car dependency isn’t freedom.

Some might ask “what’s more free than cars?”

Choices.

Choices are more free than car dependency.

It’s not a hard concept.

I’m not pitting cars against any other single mode of transport.

I’m rejecting design that creates dependency on just one mode.

Read this thread, Albertans ❤️
People often ask: what can ordinary people do to stop populists like Trump and Smith from running roughshod over democratic norms?

Populists rely on the widespread perception that their actions are supported by "the majority" and "common people."

Anything that punctures that myth helps. +
December 8, 2025 at 2:20 AM
Dr. Wesley nails it:

"If there’s a problem, it’s not that judges exist. It’s that populists don’t like being told “no.”"

We don't elect kings/queens.

The same system that gives power to Premiers gives it to our courts to protect us.

Democracy isn’t mob rule.

And the UCP don't like that. #ableg
Danielle Smith's comments about the judiciary are among the most worrying things she's said about Alberta democracy.

Conservatives need to stand up to her. Now.

Years ago, I warned that Danielle Smith would run out of enemies in political realm and turn her sights on the courts.

Her latest attacks aren't some high-minded philosophical critique of judicial supremacy.

They're pure populist pablum, specially crafted to remove yet another check on her power.

A few important points here

- Generative AI supercharged data centre growth: lobbyist and substacker lines pretending like this is just streaming are false

- Even when you consider much of the projected growth is speculative, the *likely* projects are still MASSIVE

wow. Never seen this language from Bill McKibbon, but I understand why he's using it now...
I swear maybe once a decade in public, and this is the moment. This fucking racist and all the gibbering racists nodding along behind him are the ruination of our country. Our fucking job for the next fucking year is to fucking destroy them in the next election. Fuck them.
Trump, continued: "What the Somalian people have done to Minnesota is not even believable. It’s not even believable. And a lot of it starts with the governor. A lot of it starts with Barack HUSSEIN Obama, because that’s when people started coming in... They want to kiss our country good night."
