This is precisely how fascism works, by grabbing at and taking away a little more freedom whenever events lend themselves to it. Bit by bit you lose your rights, until you turn around and realize the road you're on has been long, and democracy is well behind you over the horizon.

This is horrible. Trump and his crew shut down USAID, which has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, and they had no idea what they were doing or what would be the consequences. Completely immoral.

In my furious revulsion at what Trump said about Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, I missed that it was Michele who took the flattering cover photo of Trump for his book, The Art of the Deal. Impossibly, this makes his reaction even worse.

Real reporting:

“ProPublica journalists hiked and boated across…the epicenter of South Sudan’s outbreak…to interview families that the U.S. cut off from help. We collected medical files, diaries, meeting notes and photographs documenting cholera’s devastation after essential services stopped.”
Rubio has repeatedly insisted the govt is restarting life-saving foreign aid.

My colleagues found that’s bullshit.

The impact of the destruction of USAID is so wide-ranging. We got a field report from one of the poorest states in India, where foreign aid funded "TB champions" who educate and assist tuberculosis patients. Without their help, advocates expect a 36% increase in cases & 68% rise in deaths from TB.

USAID funding supported efforts to eradicate tuberculosis in India, one of the country’s deadliest diseases. Now, that money and support is gone.
