recently a friend had a meeting with a narrative lead at a big name entertainment company that i accidentally interrupted by texting them, and when they apologized with "sorry, my friend texted me a photo of her cat" the dept head asked to see the cat and then flipped out bc he recognized onion

I just don’t understand how so many of US are falling to see that when Beyoncé and Kendrick embedded the American flag in there performances, they were indeed speaking to the fact that WE are embedded in American culture. Because we ARE Americans. Despite all efforts to erase us.

one thing I’m seeing all over is people who admittedly don’t follow popular music feeling left out because they don’t know Kendrick’s music. believe it or not, if you ignore mainstream music for a decade you might not be familiar with the Super Bowl halftime performer
I find the "Nobody's heard of Kendrick Lamar" stuff from right-wing racist raconteurs SO disingenuous. Like set aside his huge cultural footprint in other regards, and you've AT LEAST heard "Not Like Us." That song was so big last year my MOM heard it. Man's been a mainstay for over a decade.

"..over the course of 15 minutes, Kendrick Lamar gave us what we needed. He was defiant, proud, vindictive, playful and celebratory. He was pro-Black and subversive, trolling and joyful, and through all the expectations and fighting and nastiness, he was ultimately victorious."
I wrote about the biggest rap performance of all time, Kendrick’s positioning of anti-Drake-ness as part of a larger pro-Blackness and justice for Serena Williams

Instead of saying "I didn't understand the halftime show, therefore it is bad art" maybe try and understand why you didn't get it and think critically about the presentation, symbolism, etc. This is part of the beauty of art and creativity.

One thing we can do to challenge systemic barriers in the publishing industry is throw our support behind Black and brown people in publishing.

Here’s an author I want you to do that for. Go pre-order this incredible fantasy! When it launches next month, I’ll be hosting a buddyread!
