Is Direct Air Capture of One Billion Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide per year conceivable?

Just barely.

1 billion tonnes is 1/37th of current emissions.
Direct Air Capture of One Billion Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide per year?
2 March 2025 Friends, back in September 2024, I wrote about my increasing scepticism of the feasibility of projects seeking to capture CO2 directly from the atmosphere. I had been paying one such c…

I've posted models showing that electric trucks are the future and hydrogen trucks don't make sense since 2017.
Glad it's finally becoming mainstream and good article.

With dwindling passenger car sales for hydrogen fuel cells, the technology is now looking like a non-starter for heavy-duty trucks as well.

Deep dive: How the UK plans to reach clean power by 2030

With my colleague Molly I've dug deep into the govt's 136-page action plan for decarbonising the grid by 2030

If achieved, it'd see offshore wind become backbone of power sector – in just 6yrs

NEW PAPER: The 2022 fossil fuel price jumps caused an oil and gas profit explosion. We show the US reaped the largest profit increase (USD 275bn) of any country. Big Oil claims this benefits the American people. In fact, 51% went to the richest 1%, only 1% to the bottom 50%. A 🧵

Covid vaccination at all ages reduces the risk of Long Covid—this study shows that the protective effect in children is large, mostly thanks to reduced infection risk

(We vaccinated our kid at the first available opportunity)
Just publish paper evaluating effects of vaccination on long COVID risks in children/adolescents during Delta/Omicron periods

We found vaccines strongly protected against long COVID-19, and the effect was almost wholly mediated by reduced infection risk

Just been made aware that the new jaGuar has leaked (thanks to cochespias1 on Threads).

I hope this is wrong and isn’t actually it. Because this is a backwards looking, vulgar and frankly ugly piece of design.

Please be wrong.

On The Climate Brink: Stop emissions, stop warming: A climate reality check

This is a crucial point because it determines how much warming is already "locked in" and effectively unavoidable.

The answer is very little warming is locked in.

Also, this is our 100th post!

A very genteel downward slope unfortunately.
Climate action is like a giant boulder already past its tipping point and rolling downhill toward a greener future.

Governments + corporations can slow it—with serious consequences for people and planet alike—but they can't push it back up the hill.

Gravity, history, and progress are on our side.

There are a lot of opinions about the Assisted Dying Bill, but there is one that matters the most to me. My mums, she was a palliative care nurse for 20 years, she saw it all and is clear, this Bill is needed. If it's good enough for her it is for me.

There are many things that promise to clean up fossil fuels - offsets, geoengineering, etc. But carbon capture (both at the point its released, and from the air) has been around the longest - and most recently, a revolution was promised due to a huge surge in new projects.

Let's hope that's an end to the hydrogen bus for cities.
Electric trumps them in economics and basic physics and is in its early days with room for technical and cost improvements.
In May 2023, the first of the Liverpool City Region’s new £10m fleet of state-of-the-art Hydrogen buses hit the road - heralded as a ‘big step forward’

So what happened to the buses & why are they all now off the road and stored in depots around the region?

COVID was everywhere, not just in ICU.

we all have flashbacks to doing ward rounds and knowing that the next day there will be other patients in the same beds and there was nothing we could do. and that some of our colleagues might not make it to work the next day either.
Nearly five years on, NHS workers are still feeling the effects of caring for patients with #COVID19.

A snippet here from today’s @bmj.com.

I still recall vividly certain patients. The fear in their eyes when they couldn’t breathe and knew they were dying.

That will stay with me a long time.
