Today marks 5 years since the passing of my closest collaborator and colleague, Zac Bertschy.
Most people only knew him at his best, but his best was pretty amazing, and so were his demons. Looking back, the only thing I can think is “what an unbelievable waste.”

I would add to this (because it’s literally my PhD thesis subject!) that the US online anime fandom of the 1990s-early 2000s was an inherently political space where concepts of gender, race, and sexuality were frequently discussed, instrumentalized, and came to shape the very existence of 4chan 🙂↕️🙂↕️
there's definitely some truth here, but from my perspective as someone who was active on both sites, 4chan specifically started because the dorks in ADTRW (the SA anime forum; guess what it stands for!) became enamored with 2chan and some of em decided to start an English-language version.
4chan only exists because people wouldn't stop talking about Azumanga Daioh on something awful to the point they had to start a new site. It's also where the term "waifu" comes from. Azumanga's importance is slept on.
