Our student is in their 3rd year studying forestry & mycology in undergrad, & I’m learning some great stuff along the way, too. One of this year’s MacArthur “Genius Grant” fellows runs a non-profit that published this terrific primer on fungi facts last month - highly recommended!

This names the problem exactly. ↘️

If people lack info on the real world to inform their thinking, we need ways — publicly chartered or sponsored ones, if need be — to get such info to people. It needs to be as unobtrusive _and_ as inescapable as background music.

This is an armchair theory, but:

It seems like Trump’s Portland gambit is only possible because Americans are sufficiently insulated from depictions of the real world by a universe of derivative media AND the news orgs we’d expect to cover this faithfully are off the clock anyway.

This is obviously hateful, but for people indifferent to the hate, just a big waste of money. You have the Secretary of Transportation cheering the destruction of functional public infrastructure.

Just openly cheering the destruction of any representation of gay people in public space. They think their power is totally unrestricted, and the entire country will support them rolling back society to the 1950s, or maybe the 1850s

"So, Democrats have three words for this: no fucking way. It's literally life or death. We will not let Republicans blow up our health care system."

This is, hands down, the best comms work Chuck Schumer has done in YEARS. Surprisingly good.

I once heard German Green politician and peace activist Petra Kelly talk about this, shortly before her death. She described a first nations protest in Canada, where hundreds of police and activists had a standoff that seemed destined for violence until scores of children with pillows “attacked” …

i’ve wondered whether the traditional tactic of peaceful resistance to shock the conscience of observers who see nonviolence met with force is still possible in a media environment where only novelty can get the attention of the people you need to be shocked, and portland seems to have an answer

Inside were her crib notes for attacking the senators.

Here's a powerful quick summary - just a list of questions the AG refused to answer - of what an embarrassing shitshow today's hearing was for the DoJ.

Yale researchers didn't stop there. They also identified what people most need to know to catalyze action and support climate policy; and it's not about global temps, ice sheets, or ocean currents.

What people most need to know about climate change is that (1) others care, and (2) there is hope.
