Also people should keep asking questions about the blurry lines of CPD and how they are abiding by the welcoming cities ordinance. It’s hard for me to see how blocking off and redirecting traffic isn’t facilitating immigration enticement activities.
“You could see guys with FBI, ATF, DEA jackets and vests on,” she said. “You could see plainclothes officers. You could see Chicago [police] was out there blocking off traffic, redirecting traffic, helping them—and they are not even supposed to coordinate with them.” Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance prohibits CPD from assisting ICE with immigration arrests, but the department has maintained that it can direct traffic and police protesters near immigration activity for public safety reasons.

In a statement, a CPD spokesperson said they responded to the scene after federal authorities notified them they had detained one person on an active criminal warrant there

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

Just a little note for the pm crowd. Every morning this month, I am posting one of our animals dressed for Halloween. Most are worth looking for.
Collage of six animals wearing Halloween costumes. A goat as a butterfly, a goat as a banana, a tortoise as a cheesehead, a goat as Medusa, a goat as the devil, and a dog as a cowboy

Engaged in a little retail therapy to lighten up the horrors. Is it a little cheesy? Maybe. Am I totally okay with that? YES

Another incident of federal agents pointing guns at Chicago area residents.
Tweet from @laura_n_rod

Text: A federal agent points a weapon at a woman who was recording them.

Jess, a U.S. citizen and member of a neighborhood patrol team that documents and shares ICE activity across the city, was filming when the incident occurred earlier today in the Berwyn area.

The papers w/ orange triangles are "demo bags" taped up over the windows of one of the holding cells. They had no problem showing men detained in the room to the right, but clearly didn't want anyone to see the people or conditions in the other cell. Or didn't want them to see out.

This is from a video on X, showing inside the Broadview ICE facility when Noem was in town on Fri.

For context, she's in the central room with 15 workstations setup to process detained individuals, whether they were arrested by immigration enforcement or at protests.

See the orange triangles?
Kristi Noem inside the ICE facility at 1930 Beach St. in Broadview, IL. She is standing near a white man, smiling at a desk with a computer monitor and printer. Behind her is a cell door with a man looking out a narrow slit window. Next to him, three or four other men are seen through a larger window in the cell.

Behind the white man are two upside down "demo bags" taped up over the windows to another cell.

Fucking crazy shit.

I'm sorry, need to put a correction here; I mistook Ellis' comments while trying to take notes and listen at the same time.

Here Ellis' comments referred to people whose rights were violated by unidentifiable ICE agents not being able to find relief, not ICE agents' own rights being violated.
djbyrnes1.bsky.social
She adds that violations of ICE agents' rights can't be addressed if they won't identify themselves.

She concedes it can be "scary" to be followed home or harassed, but adds,

"That doesn't mean you get to do this job and be anonymous."

One of my favorite things to see in my hood - the little balcony angel blessing the restaurant patio next door.
A lovely red brick building with a black wrought iron balcony. A little white angel statue is propped on the rail and is reaching out a hand, as if blessing the patio of the restaurant next door.

FRIDAY: CPD denies my FOIA for bodycam footage from 7500 South Shore because footage is only flagged if, among other things, an arrest was made.

SUNDAY: CPD spox acknowledges that they made at least one arrest at 7500 South Shore in an on-the-record statement provided for this story.
Letter on CPD Letterhead in response to FOIA request:

"The Chicago Police Department (CPD) is in receipt of your Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 ILCS 140/1, et seq.,
request for the following:
All body-worn camera and in-car camera video associated with the CPD response to 7500 block of S. South Shore Dr
(and/or 2700 block of E. 75th St) the morning of September 30, 2025, during which at least five people were arrested by

federal immigration agents. (For context please see: https://www.wbez.org/immigration/2025/10/01/massive-
immigration-raid-on-chicago-apartment-building-leaves-residents-reeling-i-feel-defeated)

In regard to your request for Body Worn Camera video, please be advised that any available Body Worn Camera video is
denied pursuant to the Sec 7(1)(a), which exempts from inspection and copying the following: "Information specifically
prohibited from disclosure by federal or State law or rules and regulations adopted under federal or State law.” See 5
ILCS 140/7(1)(a). Section 10-20(b) of the Law Enforcement Officer-Worn Body Camera Act states that officer-worn body
camera recordings are not subject to disclosure under FOIA, except where a recording has been “flagged” because of
“the filing of a complaint, discharge of a firearm, use of force, arrest or detention, or resulting death or bodily harm,” or
the requester is the subject of the video footage. 50 ILCS 706/10-20(b)(1)-(3). Moreover, where the requester is not a
subject of the video, and the subject has a reasonable expectation of privacy at the time of the recording, disclosure
pursuant to FOIA is only permissible where the subject is either a victim and/or witness, and has consented to disclosure
in writing. 50 ILCS 706/10-20(b)(2). Accordingly, FOIA is not applicable to your request for body-worn camera video." Email from CPD spokesperson:

"Hello,
The Chicago Police Department responded to the 7500 block of S. South Shore Drive on
September 30, 2025 at approximately 2:00 a.m. after being notified by federal authorities that
they had detained an individual with an active criminal warrant. After responding to the scene
and verifying the active criminal warrant, arresting officers placed a 46-year-old male offender
into custody. This individual has been charged with an Issuance of Warrant. Please refer to the
Cook County Sheriff's Office for additional information related to the warrant.
To be clear, the Chicago Police Department only responded to the scene for criminal
enforcement related to the offender's active criminal warrant. We did not participate in or assist
with any immigration enforcement.
In accordance with the City of Chicago’s Municipal Code, which includes the Welcoming
City Ordinance, the Chicago Police Department does not assist federal immigration authorities
with enforcement action solely based on immigration status.
Additionally, CPD does not document immigration status and does not share such information
with federal authorities.

@unraveledpress.com & other press have been threatened, shot with less-lethals and arrested while reporting on federal immigration activities in Chicagoland and on the resulting protests at Broadview.

I'm now at a hearing asking the federal court to rein ICE & co in. I'll let you know how it goes.
unraveledpress.com
Well, yeah, we're suing ICE.

This wasn't really a hard decision. As little faith as we have in institutions, we recognize the value of drawing visible lines in the sand. We drew ours personally a while ago, but better late than never.

May every protester be freed and may this occupation end.

Spectacular googly-eyed octopus does battle with a lobster in this 2,000 year-old Roman mosaic from Pompeii! 🐙 🦞

Fantastic fishy onlookers too! 👀

My photo shows a polychrome mosaic depicting Mediterranean marine life using earthy-coloured tesserae (mosaic tiles) against a black tessarae background. At the centre of the mosaic is a pale-coloured octopus composed of off-white and light brown tesserae with some of its writhing tentacles wrapped around the body of a lobster composed of light red, and pinky-brown tesserae. The octopus has an egg shaped body/head and it stares at the viewer with large eyes made of brown and pink circles with black centres.

The octopus and lobster are surrounded by various species of large and small Mediterranean fish and a mollusc, including an eel and a flat fish. On the left hand side of the scene there is a small kingfisher bird on top of a rock. Some of the fish appear to be watching the fight between the octopus and the lobster

This mosaic comes from the House of the Geometric Mosaics in Pompeii. Now on display at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples.
