Here's Cernunnos, wishing you all a merry Yuletide, however you celebrate!
The name Cernunnos appears in an inscription on a first-century CE Roman pillar from Gaul, associated with a horned figure.

It's Christmas Eve! The tree is ready to decorate with the twins when they arrive, and the fridge is bulging with food. And for my last advent calendar collage it's a frilly layered tree, decked in sand gold tinsel and star, next to a bright promenade lamp beside the still quiet night time sea.

Someone in America on Substack Notes saw this and corrected my spelling of mum to "mom" and although I think - despite everything we find out, every day - there remain innumerable fantastic things about America, that probably tells you quite a bit about America, and none of it is very good.
First time my mum went to my dad's parents house she noticed my granddad had a party hat on. Seemed odd as there was no party.
"Why is he wearing that?" she asked my dad later.
"It's because he's so forgetful," said my dad. "My mum makes him wear it every time he's switched the immersion heater on."

As we go into the holidays, I leave you with this stone relief and stunning cuneiform inscription.

The writing is engraved over the image of a protective spirit whose image once flanked the doorway to the throne room of an Assyrian palace in Nimrud.

We have massively underestimated non-human animals' complexity.

Long past time to bury Descartes' animals-as-machines, yet it still dominant (even word "unlikely" in headline)

Most small things in nature bring me joy, but one which never ceases to warm the cockles of my heart is the chaos at the #ŚląskaSwifts boxes on my balcony. Already looking forward to their return in May! Wishing everyone a joyous Yuletide 😸

Second time this month, this request has come up on our neighbourhood Facebook. Even though I know the British English term “cool box” (AmE cooler), I never read this right on the first try. Especially not at a time of year when pretty boxes are in short supply.

An argument for closed compounds.
