If you made a Venn diagram of every weird person I knew in Silicon Valley during the first dot-com boom, centrifuged it, extracted the pellet, and re-suspended it in high-proof eugenics with a splash of AI, you'd end up with something like this.

It'll take a strong stomach to read this "gift" link.

Fandom is not in fact "the new religion"!! This is an excruciatingly basic take!! Fandom moralism has roots in US Protestant moralism and black-and-white thinking because of the outsize influence that US fans and media have, not because it is anything like actual religious practice!!

there's a certain way certain people write fiction about disability that really sets my teeth on edge, and it's an approach that I can only describe as 'educational hugboxing'

in this, portrayal of disability must be constantly affirming, and it must use specific and correct terminology

This great thread makes a point I've been trying to convey for years. Calling all data-driven prediction or decision software "AI" is a huge gift to LLM hypemen, who want people to believe, incorrectly, that LLM data centers are crucial for solar forecasting or operating buildings and power grids.
Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

Trends and "cringe" are silly and being over 30 means wearing whatever tf you want but also feeling the advantage of being an old millennial in the fashion generation wars. Look stylish with the simple rubric of "would I have worn this in 1999?"

“Work-conditioned housing.” Free idea for Trump: you could put a nice MAGA motto at the entrance, something like “Work Sets You Free”
Under Trump, the draconian future of homelessness policy is coming into focus: mass internment. Utah is building a 16-acre site to detain up to 1,300 homeless people inside locked "accountability centers." This is profoundly alarming.

“No Kings” is great , but we really don't get a functioning democracy back until we internalize, bone deep, the instinctive response to this and every other statement like it: “I don’t care what that rich guy thinks.”

Make it your morning affirmation. Say it ten times at the top of every hour.

Funny: the only thing they took was an umbrella. Rifled through the glove box but left the two Fall Out Boy CDs 😆

The pundit class's notion of "free speech" is predicated on a division of humanity into those who *participate* in debates and those who are the *topic* of debate, where treating one of the former as if they were one of the latter is seen as the direst of all threats to "free speech".

- there are popular published authors you won't touch with a bargepole because you remember What They Did when they wrote fanfic
You have to have changed your main fandom platform at least four times AND you must have at least three fandom-related subjects that cause an overwhelming wave of exhaustion to hit you whenever people start arguing over them
what constitutes a fandom-elder and when do you hit that milestone? is it by age? or through years of service? or is it something indefinable and ungraspable?

As I’ve said before, the worst thing social media did was turn fame into a middle class job.
All I'm saying is there are perverse incentives everywhere for even regular people to propel the narrative that anytime you step outside you will be blown to bits by an Antifa bazooka. The platforms have incentivized it to drive engagement, and creators can live a middle class lifestyle on it.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
