Really sad to read as a former prof at a nearby PSU branch. In Berks County alone, Albright is competing with four other colleges (two public, one CC, and another private) over the same dwindling population of students, not to mention the dozens of other schools within a 60-mile radius.
For a couple of years now, I've been fascinated with what's happening at small liberal arts colleges, which are running out of money for reasons unrelated to Trump funding cuts. Businessweek let me go deep on the problems, and one college that's trying to blaze a new trail.
Why a College Fighting for Survival Is Slashing Econ and Physics Majors
At Albright in Pennsylvania, the new president is cutting programs, selling art and real estate, and vowing not to hire anyone with tenure. Is this the way forward for liberal arts colleges?

Our beloved Alice Wong has joined the ancestors. It was one of the great honors of my life to call Alice my friend, co-author & co-conspirator. She was a true genius, a force of nature the likes of which the world has never seen before. I love you, Alice, and am equal parts grateful and devastated

"In 2025, 40% of women aged 15 to 44 say they would move abroad permanently if they had the opportunity. The current figure is four times higher than the 10% who shared this desire in 2014, when it was generally in line with other age and gender groups."

Emotional labor, when your affect is an essential part of your job
There is something really wrong with people who need workers to be not just competent, but slavishly fake-happy. "Slavishly" used on purpose, bc that's where this grotesquerie comes from.
"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.

They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.

If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."

🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.

Advance.

The local paper on Staten Island is known as the AD-vance, not the Ad-VANCE.
What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

The notification window is not terribly long, which means the more we can blast this information out the better. I will be screaming about it A LOT once the submission link is live!

I have been doing this for two decades now, and I have never, ever seen an election where the under-30s outvoted the senior citizens. I cannot underscore how unheard this is. The typical American doesn't even start voting until after they get married and/or have kids.

the literal mascot of the whole country is the statue who greets immigrants
Not just an affirmative good, it’s supposed to be central to what we are as a country. This is where we lift the lamp beside the golden door.
kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

I reported on economics full-time in 2020. It taught me there are no incentives to have a baby in the US. Women in the US have to pay for pre-natal, medical and child care, earn less, do most of the parenting and chores, get promoted less, and are now at 27% higher risk of maternal mortality.
