A lot of scientists are poor communicators. It's why science communications is such an important field and a skill that should be taught in all STEM programs.
Politics is all about communication, messaging, negotiation skills, etc.
Can be developed and there are some scientists good at it.

It’s probably a good day to explain to your non-scientist socials that graduate students are not merely the next generation of academic science, they are an important component of the current scientific labor force. Feel free to mention that this is cut rate labor as well.

Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

This is at the heart of the grief we feel at the firing of Federal scientists. Scientists go to school and train for years, and mostly don’t get rich or work easy hours. Why?

Because we get to look at the stars. We get to ask questions, and to try to use the answers to help people.

Yes. While there are absolutely things Democrats can and must do to slow, obstruct, etc, GOP hold both House and Senate majorities, severely limiting our options.

Johnson and Thune are handing over the own keys and relinquishing their own power. Even for the cynics this should be a shock.
We all like to yell at the Democrats, but it’s really Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune who are letting Elon Musk and his faceless goon squad make a mockery of their power as leaders of a coequal branch without uttering a peep or lifting a finger.

Well worth a listen for some straight talk about the value (or lack thereof) of generative AI.
Was on NPR's onthemedia.bsky.social with Brooke Gladstone talking about generative AI. I believe I am the first person to refer to Sam Altman as a nasty little man on the radio

It’s Penguin Awareness Day!

African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) are a critically endangered species native to South Africa and Namibia. While initial decline was largely due to egg and guano collection, their current decline is linked to commercial fishing and climate change #penguinawarenessday

To any potential reviewers: when I publish our emperor penguin tracks I want you to know that kids gave our penguins names like Big Mac Turbo 2000, Sparkles, & Golden Princess. And they will, nonnegotiably, be referred to as such in the paper. Thank you for understanding.

This is a really important point, and as we all consider where to go next or whether to just unplug, we should all be supporting education and journalism at the state and local levels, too (with time, money, advocacy, testimony, whatever we have at our disposal). This won't just fix itself.
I’ve seen a bunch of smug takes lately about “welll you shouldn’t have relied on social media, you fools.” But where is the alternative? We’ve disinvested from science education, from science journalism, and it’s good, actually, for independent people trying to make the world better to be supported.
