You have every right to worry about the state of things. But don’t do yourself a disservice by going into a panic—that makes it impossible to keep the facts straight, and it makes everything worse. Take a break, take a breath, and talk to experts.
In other words, keep calm and keep pushing forward.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 2466: Writing takes resilience. You will sometimes be afraid. You will sometimes be rejected, criticized, disappointed. Don’t try to avoid those things. Feel them. Learn from them. Use them. Tell yourself that you have already done the hardest part. You have begun.

Young people SHOULD “have it easier” than you did. I’m sorry you got the strap up hill both ways and paid your debts with pounds of flesh, but the reason we work for progress is to make growing up and growing old gentler, easier, kinder, freer. Struggle isn’t necessary in a healthy society.

Hey you know how people made the Tesla brand radioactively toxic and crashed its entire corporate structure?

You can do that with authoritarian brutality and with neoliberal oppression and exploitation.

You chase these motherfuckers from society until all that’s left is something real and better.

“In troubling times, it’s easy to adopt an ‘every man for himself’ attitude. It’s tempting to give up on helping others for the sake of one’s own survival. But When the Elephants Dance argues that such a stance is self-defeating.”

What did you all read this month?

My March was more hectic than usual, so I only got through two books—Braiding Sweetgrass and What’s a Witch to Do. But they were both excellent reads, so I see this as a win 😊

If you want to help disabled people fight New York's proposed mask ban... wear a mask.

If more people would mask up in solidarity, these important accessibility tools would be harder to ban.

Help us normalize masking and protect your health in the process!

I’ve been wearing masks in public since 2020. Thanks to masks, I haven’t had any trouble with COVID, long covid, or any other airborne diseases. Banning masks would make life harder for everyone, especially with public health threats like bird flu and measles on the horizon.
