The Infinity Loop of Writing So the protagonist walks straight into a trap, gets held hostage and it tied to a chair. . . Wait, does the antagonist use duct tape, zip ties or good ol’ fashioned rope? Where do they get the rope from? What is it even made of? Is it, like, braided? <googles ‘how do you make rope’> <spends an hour watching Youtube tutorials> Okay, new story. A plucky young 18th century rope-maker is scraping out a living, unaware of the threat to their livelihood from the looming Industrial Revolution. . . <googles ‘Industrial Revolution’> <orders six books on the rise of steam power> Okay, so now it’s a steampunk story. A plucky young rope-maker is kidnapped for their expertise and ironically tied to a chair with their own rope by a fat cat factory owner who wants to know why industrial-produced rope is inferior to the homespun stuff. . . And on and on until the end of recorded time. . .

I think we've reached a point where consumers need to be able to pick which shipping companies are used for orders. I shouldn't have to be forced to deal with certain companies.

This was one of the first tweets I had go "viral" on Screenwriting Twitter many years ago. Here's hoping there will be more writers' rooms opening in 2025 for it to come handy again! 🤞🏼
A hand holding a notebook with handwritten notes: Fill the gap of the room. Be the sand. Put the show first. Then you'll get thick skin. Don't pitch problems, always support. Be the biggest cheerleader of the show. It's about the showrunner. Think out the pitch; bullet point it. You are an investment. Your pitch doesn't have to be touchdown. Sometime it's the timing, not the idea. Play to your strength, but you have to evolve. Find other/grow strengths. Once you put the show first, you stop thinking about yourself. Don't work from a scared place. Work twice as hard. Do your homework. Be positive. Don't join in on the snarkiness. Keep track of the changes. Then apply on the board. Be open to change. Let things go. Staff superpower: see the story from a completely different way. Don't get hung up on the details. Think about the filmmaking. Always have solutions. Don't be scared to ask for advice. Do you homework: study the showrunner. At the least, your script should LOOK right. Modulate your notes on scripts. Focus on the small ones. It's not your job to fix the big stuff [as the staff writer]. Don't give notes based on how YOU would've written it.
