Imo one issue with moderation is that there’s one group who think about it through a lens of consistent rational-legal rules and there’s one grou who think about it in a more informal norm based sense of “is this person ruining the vibe or not” and these groups mainly talk past each other

On the one hand: people are allowed to be sadists, as they are allowed to be masochists. On the other hand: there is a considerable difference between “let’s play-pretend I’m hurting you” and “I will sulk/treat you as defective unless you actually let me hurt you.”
