The Hong Kong fires is a political story, not a bamboo tragedy. It is about what happens when institutions are no longer accountable because of the erosion of the rule of law. When a government focuses on controlling the people, not serving them. When civil society is crushed.

Music from the Spanish speaking world is wildly excellent this year, much better than the average coming out in English. Just in the past four weeks, these four incredibly forward looking, brilliant albums came out. I have not heard any album in English this year that comes close to any of them

Okay, here are some first reflections on Watson.
Watson's life is a tragedy, really of Shakespearean proportions. He did not, as most bios will tell you, do one great thing when he was young and then collect laurels for it for the next 60 years. His career arc was unlike any in science.
