I'm a linguist. I will mostly be lurking, occasionally posting about britpol or maybe linguistics.

So rather than writing about Coptic I'm going to write about how Nepali and English are related to each other. (thread)
they're really annoyed, damn, I might actually have to start posting about linguistics (anyone want to hear about Coptic?)
that detach quote feature is really handy for when you enrage the Americans
I actually love answering this question (cf. my handle)
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

The Altered Images song 'Happy Birthday' is a Christmas song as long as you acknowledge that it is addressed to Sir Isaac Newton and (like me) refuse to recognise the time-thievery that is the Gregorian Calendar

Just saw a thread full of people I like/respect being suckered by an obvious troll and it reminded me of the good old internet

I think there are several interesting things about that.

1. the UK manages to score worse than eg Poland, Hungary, Türkiye, which all have a very conservative discourse hegemony.

2. even with all of the press, from guardian to times, blasting transphobia for years, transphobia barely gets 50%.

Its happening
I want a UK election where 5 parties all get exactly 20% of the vote and I'm pleased to say we seem to be headed in that direction

When your priority is stopping reform
“A coronation rather than a contest to install him as Labour leader”, you say.

I still don't fully trust Polanski on account of him having been a Lib Dem well past when that was acceptable but he is definitely doing his job well.

This is true but n.b. there are very few people supporting them and it is absurd that they are on course for a majority. More don't knows should say they are voting Green.
Looking at polling averages, Reform has dipped a little recently but it's largely because of Labour 24 voters who had been saying "don't know" now saying Green.

As DKs they were excluded but as Greens they are not, so Reform drop even though they have the same number of people supporting them.

Do I know anyone on here who went to a British boys boarding school -preferably the elite kind- within the last 20 years? If that doesn't describe you then retweet this until somebody it does describe sees this.

The malwarebytes Google opting-your-emails-into-ai-training thing is not true. The post is based on one bad tweet.

I know anti-tech lamenting is a Bluesky core principle, but please use the same judgement you would for any other clickbait.

I tend to glaze-over when I read something and it quotes song lyrics. Not because i think lyrics are bad (they often are!), but because I think there’s massive damage done to music when you abstract words from musical sound (and often ideology is operating at a sonic level!)

Understand these numbers are low in the US, but comparing these to the numbers to the figures UK politicians get is very funny

Academics want physical contact with their colleagues? That doesn't seem like a problem to me tbh
I have real questions about how academics in the humanities normalized paying thousands to travel to/speak at conferences, while simultaneously claiming journal pubs shouldnt be pay-for-play. How is one rigorous while the others a scam? Yall really just wanted unis to pay for you to take a trip

I genuinely believe that most people have more or less identical intelligence and potential and that all that is needed for them to make all the use they want of it is for society to give them the understanding, space and resources they need for it.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

"biological pronouns" is an insane phrase
BREAKING: The Sixth Circuit, in a 10-7 en banc decision, holds that an Ohio school district's anti-bullying policy that requires students to use children's preferred pronouns is likely unconstitutional on these facts.

Judge Murphy, a Trump appointee, writes the court's decision.

The Nepali word is भुइँकटहर, which means 'ground-jackfruit', which is a fun variation.
The British saw un ananas, and
Fun fact: the Italian word for eggplant melanzana, is derived from mela, apple

Italians saw eggplants and were like "that's a weird apple"

Similar to how Italians saw the pomegranate and went "that's a seedy apple"

And saw oranges and went "that's an apple of the orange tree"

And saw peaches and
