I don’t often write about living artists, but when I do they have a tendency to win MacArthurs. Make of that what you will. Congratulations, Heather Christian, on a much-deserved win! www.macfound.org/fellows/clas...

Yes, I did just skim through 10 months of @titachico.bsky.social's posts to find this gem.

Happy anniversary to my favorite copy editor comment of all time.

"You use 'long eighteenth century' a lot in this book, but each century is exactly as long as another."
"You use "long eighteenth century" a lot in this book, but each century is exactly as long as another. I do see in your bibliography that there is a book that uses this. If you want to keep "long" here, please provide a brief explanation of what you mean.
After that, I see no need to keep reminding your readers of it..

Yes, that's it! Thank you!

Does anyone remember who it was that received the most hilarious proofreading feedback ever: "You keep writing 'The Long 18th Century,' but all centuries are the same length"?

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

The sort of people the administration calls 'terrorists' :

"[the 84 year olds] were rushed by federal officers “for no apparent reason.” She said her husband was leaning on his walker and wearing his Vietnam veterans cap as he was pushed to the ground."

Me, mid-rant: The thing is, I actually do love America! I love that it belongs to everyone! I love that whoever shows up are the right people!

R: Open space principles! And whenever it ends will be the right time. 💀

One reason the One Special Boy thinks he can just issue Executive Orders to do whatever he wants is because he keeps issuing Executive Orders & doing whatever he wants - in obvious violation of the law & Constitution - & no one who swore oaths to country & Constitution is doing anything about it.

Read this whole thread. “Revolutionary” isn’t a metaphor when we’re talking social media.

I went to a one-day conference today sponsored by an edtech company and a question on the last panel was, what’s a buzzword we should get rid of? And one guy was like “Revolution. First the internet was revolutionary, then email, then social media, now AI. We should replace it with evolution”

this great point about the social character of knowledge —how knowing real things relies on others signaling when you’re wrong—is another way of highlighting the political importance of social shame. It also clarifies the fundamental nihilism of the AI-industrial complex

“It was heartbreaking to watch,” said Watson. “Even if you’re not a mother, seeing kids coming out buck naked and taken from their mothers, it was horrible.”…

“Stuff was everywhere…people’s birth certificates, and papers thrown all over. Water was leaking into the hallway. It was wicked crazy.”
Massive immigration raid on Chicago apartment building leaves residents reeling: 'I feel defeated'
The Department of Homeland Security said federal agents with Border Patrol, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested 37 people in the raid.

I experience vicarious gender euphoria when I see trans people experiencing it. I don't understand why that's not every cis person's experience.

No CNN I don't think she was a fugitive from Tupac's godmother actually
CNN, 2 hours ago: an old photo, not the most flattering of a beautiful woman, Assata Shakur, above a headline reading Assata Shakur, fugitive from FBI and Tupac's godmother, dies in Cuba

Once when my spouse was running a half marathon, I had to text her with my stunning realization that Mos Def was short for Most Definitely. I have a PhD.

My spouse has this thing he calls “grasshopper moments” —from when he was a kid and he realized that grasshoppers are called that because they hop in the grass. I was today years old when I realized that quart is short for a quarter of a gallon. As in a quart of milk.
I have a PhD.

NYC-area folks! Please come out to this "New Yorkers Against ICE" rally tomorrow at 6:00PM in Foley Square. My union helped organize this action, and we're hoping for a big turnout. Foley Square is just a couple of blocks away from the immigration courthouses where ICE is kidnapping our neighbors.
Read, blue, and yellow digital sign announcing a protest in NYC on September 25th with butterflies along the border that reads:

New Yorkers Against ICE

6PM, 9/25, Foley Square

DEMANDS

1) ICE out of New York, ICE out of the Courts!
2) Pass NY4All in Albany & NYC Trust Act in NYC!
3) No Troops in NYC! Hands Off NYC!

Call your NYC and NYC reps - reps.fyi.
