We just have to keep practising and realising that every moment is precious, and so are we. Not wonderful perhaps, but precious, and human, and as Maezumi Roshi said, ‘Living the unsurpassed life.’…

1995, studying in Prague for a year. I went to Bucharest by myself, fully intending to shell out for a hotel since there wasn’t a lot of backpacker-level tourist infrastructure yet. Showed up to the hotel to check in & the desk clerk took one look at me and said “You can’t stay here.”
I would like to hear about a time someone, a stranger even, was very kind to you without any prompting, ulterior motive, or strings attached.

Remarkable how brutal the ruling against Trump on Abrego Garcia truly is: It details flagrant and malicious abuses of power all throughout. Trump and Stephen Miller were testing their ability to spread lawless state terror. But the court held the line. 1/

Fiasco for Trump as Judge Issues Harsh Rebuke in Abrego Garcia Case
Judge Paula Xinis’s ruling temporarily freed Kilmar Abrego Garcia from custody. It also savagely indicted Trump’s lawless handling of this whole affair from start to finish.

this perfectly captures this entire administration’s “the emperor has no clothes” energy

we are all expected to pretend this man is the King of Health, and he himself believes it, which is why he confidently in front of witnesses attempted a thing he cannot do, knowing they will all say that he did

I’ve forgotten this sometimes but being able to discover something you like, curate it, and make time to enjoy it *is* intelligence, connecting with art is intelligence, empathy is intelligence, the way of the dullard is to find nothing meaningful in art except for a way to seem snidely clever

The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

It is this quiet, persistent practice of seeing clearly and letting go that transforms our lives. There is no need for elaborate rituals or rigid adherence to techniques.

I remember when there was a discussion on Twitter about Shein's manufacturing practices and some apologists invented all sorts of fantastical machinery and technology to avoid facing the more horrifying truth. Reminds me of this comedian's joke.

tolkien was incredibly inconsistent on orcs himself, honestly. you can see it throughout the letters. the problem is that when we hear them talk they're clearly sapient, self-motivated creatures with a concept of right and wrong, albeit a deeply broken one.
Admittedly I do wonder if what all of this basically comes down to is the fact that some of you not only don't believe in the idea of supernatural evil (I don't either!) but also find it fundamentally so hard to conceptualise that you think any attempt to depict it is masking something else.
So much comes down to whether the fictional creation is presented as a personlike thing with an inner life or as something which has no inner life as we understand it, a monster (if animalistic enough) or a demon. But a lot of people online are deeply uncomfortable with the idea of the latter.

precisely. it turns out instruction, education, is often forcing someone to do something they ultimately do not want to do, at least by a first approximation and sometimes for years of their life. so much crying about traditional education "deserving this" is rooted in it.

even every theory of pedagogy kinda falls apart in the face of "but they've gotta want to learn and you can't make em want things they don't want" and so it goes also with AI - i find it really helpful personally in learning math but i am a sicko who learns math for fun

This will be a long thread on yesterday police massacre in Rio.

In nothern Rio de Janeiro city, there is a couple of hills called Complexo da Penha. It's Comando Vermelho("Red Command", a drug gang), or CV, territory.

CV is the greatest gang in Rio, second in the whole Brazil.

🧵 Awful awful massacre in Brazil
Gente, é o maior massacre no Brasil desde o Araguaia.
