A bit of a hopeful thread at the close of a year that could have been worse.
My Cassandra cred's pretty solid--20+ years on far right beat, ten on Trump, nobody ever accused me of being a ray of sunshine. But at the end of this bad year, I think this too is true: fascism took so much, & yet nowhere near all it could & wants. There's so much left to fight for.

I like these stories. Everyday people stepping up.
Thankfully, communities across the country are fighting back.

- An appraiser chasing ICE agents on his bicycle
- A fetish shop owner distributing whistles
- “Walking school buses” protecting kids
- A social worker putting $$ in commissary accounts

Donald Trump's return to the White House, a fragile ceasefire in Gaza, war in Ukraine and Sudan, a new pope and Gen Z protests around the world.

This is genuinely horrifying. Fact-free far-right agitprop given accolades by credible media across the political spectrum.

IT'S A WONDERFUL ESSAY: It seems people usually rewatch 'It's a Wonderful Life' just before Christmas. Can I commend to you this marvelous essay we published a few years ago? It could change the way you understand that classic movie.

There Is No Mary Problem in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’
George’s vision of his wife without him is essential to the film, but critics continue to miss its true—and profound—meaning.

For the first of two end-of-the-year episodes of @pandemia.bsky.social, I talked to @drdemetre.bsky.social about what happened in 2025 at the CDC and how he thinks about the future of vaccines and public health in the US.

I don't understand any rhyme or reason to the organization or provenance of the various tranches of Epstein Files, but they clearly contain tons of raw investigative materials of dubious reliability/value and—at the risk of being a huge buzzkill—we all should exercise some careful discernment

More than 1,000 charities submitted federal tax filings without language reflecting diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in mission statements from their earlier filings.

Others went as far as to change their names.

I keep saying this but no one is connecting the dots. The war is to satisfy legal preconditions for mass removal *domestically* of Latinos (i.e., suddenly a lot of people are going to be “Venezuelan” for purposes of removal). This is 100% Stephen Miller…oil claim is to make grandpa go along
There is no national security logic that would impel the US to want to do regime change in Venezuela. It's simply not that important. I'm not even sure wag the dog is the right metaphor for what's happening here. Seems like an insane misallocation of US national security assets and attention.
Trump: "Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled ... It will only get bigger, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before — Until such time as they return to the USA all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us."

🧵Haitian refugees, a boat, and the photographer who took the recent Trump administration Vanity Fair photos.
A story I found about Haiti:

In 1999, a group of Haitians were tired of political disorder and dreamed of a better life in the United States. So they built a small, 23-foot boat by hand using pine trees, scrap wood, and used nails. They called the boat "Believe in God."

One reason CBP hits this lot so often, besides essentially shooting fish in a barrel, is that it’s right next to their office.

Didn’t meet quota for the day? Just go grab some Uber/Lyft drivers at the end of the day.

Chavez did forcibly expropriate oil fields from U.S. companies, in order to nationalize them. It was a foolish, counterproductive move that contributed to ruining the country's oil industry, but the notion that we're going to literally invade them to restore our investments is very 19th Century.

America, more mass shootings a year than than days of the year.
This is college in the United States. Video from inside a Brown University building shows the moment that police found a group of students who were sheltering after the shooting on campus. This isn't freedom.

Not the first time we’ve had survivors of multiple school shootings, and I’m surprised this sick country doesn’t have a punch card system at this point.
Zoe Weissman - survivor of 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL

Mia Tretta - survivor of 2019 Saugus High School shooting in Santa Clarita, CA

Both are now students at Brown University in Providence, RI.
Zoe Weissman, a sophomore at Brown University, joins us to discuss the shooting on Brown's campus in Providence, Rhode Island. She was in middle school in Parkland, Florida during the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School massacre. She is now an advocate for gun control and gun violence prevention.
