My constituent, Wilmer, was mauled by an ICE attack dog despite the fact that, as he has consistently explained, he was not resisting arrest or trying to flee—his wife and young children, all U.S. citizens, were forced to watch helplessly as Wilmer was violently attacked and dragged away.

When sad or grotesque things are being done, it helps me to remember how immense our context is and to broaden that sense of "we". Imagine doing that for a living!

Exactly. The new U.S. National Security Strategy is much worse for Europe than most people had imagined. Europe is described as a bigger threat than both China and Russia, and they outline the need for regime change in Western European countries as part of a civilizational struggle.
I assumed the NSS would just ignore/deprioritize Europe (It did that on defense/NATO).

But the actual message was: Europe matters to us, we must save it from itself, the EU and its wokeness. Thus, the USG is going all in on foreign interference to help the far-right win a civilizational war.

Simply amazing that the Supreme Court declared an end to legal race discrimination in the affirmative action case two years ago and now allows overt racism in both immigration arrests and redistricting.

Using race to help minorities? Bad. Using it to discriminate against them? Very, very good.

it's funny that in the last window of Democratic rule the broadest horizon the president could imagine was commissioning a study on possible reforms to the Supreme Court, the same Court that ruled his insurrectionist rival could run again and had repeatedly overruled standing law to partisan end

The fact that a second strike like that in an armed conflict is definitely a war crime should not completely negate the fact that *there is no war* and ALL the strikes are cold-blooded murder. The whole chain of command are murderers.

Agree with this thread. Worth reading in full.

25 years ago John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, and AC Barrett all worked on GWBush's 2000 Florida recount team. What they're doing now is, if anything, more nakedly partisan.

Fire-breathing dissent by Kagan, with Sotomayor and Jackson.
They're not even trying to appear nonpartisan anymore.
#BREAKING: Over dissents from the three democratic appointees, #SCOTUS puts Texas's new House maps back into effect for (and, presumably, through) the 2026 midterms.

I'll post the ruling shortly.

If you murder someone because you’re afraid to lose your job, that’s still murder.
In those military organizations, respect for the Chain of Command is sacrosanct. If you want to keep your job, you do as your told. This concept of “disobeying illegal orders” is an utopia. Especially when the Commander-in-Chief was told by SCOTUS that he cannot be found to have acted criminally.

There’s also something especially crazy-making about SCOTUS’s “eagerness to playact a district court” (Kagan) in a *shadow docket* decision that doesn’t really engage with the facts at all. The gap between the professionalism of the district courts and SCOTUS’s arbitrariness couldn’t be more obvious
There are so many things wrong with this ruling, including the total disregard for the clear error standard. But what really gets me is the notion that legislatures can evade judicial review of their maps simply by passing them as close as possible to Election Day

Exciting to see Seattle piloting bold housing reform.

These efforts should be empowered nationally by a renewed focus on public housing , deploying HUD resources to eradicate homelessness and guarantee affordable housing.

It's time to treat the housing crisis like a crisis.
Seattle’s newly elected city attorney says she will reverse her predecessor’s policy of barring people suspected of certain crimes from entering parts of the city. “I will not criminally charge someone for being in an area they’re not supposed to be.”

As Justice Kagan begins her dissent by pointing out, what is even the point of trial, of fact-finding, of clear error, of standards of review, when the Supreme Court simply ignores every single part of that and decides everything purely on the papers without any real consideration of the facts?
