Today a local conservative and ICE agent who cried bloody murder when asked to wear a mask during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic clarified he’s actually totally fine with wearing masks as long as it’s to ruin lives, not save them.

So let me get this straight: masks are bad and un-American if worn to fight a pandemic, but good if worn by people claiming to be government agents when they kidnap people off the street

Thinking about devastating cuts to NSF: US gov-funded science has been the engine upon which most of the tech wealth was generated. But the oligarchs (currently hoarding much of that $) think it’s their own brilliance & not the accident of standing close to the scientific engine that made them rich.

The only way forward, that I can see, requires both courage and collective action. If we’re not going to fight for our students and our scholarship, then what the hell are we doing anyway?
University presidents, the time is now! Unshackle the general counsel's office! File all the lawsuits! Release the faculty upon the op-ed sections! Write to your alumni, parents, and donors! 1. For the past thirty years I've had the best job in the world.

I've had the opportunity to follow my curiosity; explore the workings of nature and society; mentor students and junior colleagues in the same process; and teach generations of students about it all.

Right, if the government isn’t willing to adequately fund research, and researchers must avoid undue industry influence — then how the f*ck does research get done?
I would just like to point out RFK Jr’s health EO puts all the “duh, you can fund your research through industry” people in a bind. Which is it? Should we lean more into industry funding, as they suggest? Or distance ourselves from industry, as this EO demands? 🤔

Everyone needs to call their Senators and Representatives. Universities are the economic engine for many towns across country. This will destroy many of them who depend on these funds for their operating budgets.

This is what amounts to an ILLEGAL & indiscriminate funding cut for research centers everywhere. It will mean shuttering labs across the country, layoffs in red & blue states, and derailing lifesaving research on everything from cancer to opioid addiction.

We all need to speak out to save lives.

"Nobel laureates call on National Academies and biotech CEOs to speak out against Trump attacks on science"

The societies, academies, and other leaders have been MIA for years, leaving it to individual scientists to pick up the slack.

Maybe time to step up?

Such a shock to see that the folks who screamed the loudest about being “censored” during the Covid pandemic are now cheering on & applauding Trump’s censorship. It’s almost as if they were never really free speech advocates at all (“free speech for me but not for thee”)—Who could have predicted it?
