I think hippies, like their fellow travelers the US Libertarians, need to be viewed as people whose idea was tested and didn't work. "We can improve the world by improving ourselves spiritually first" no, wrong, sorry. Doesn't work. Everyone who realized it doesn't work stopped being a hippie.

This is an ineffective and unsafe aid delivery method that allows politicians to shirk their responsibilities under international law under the guise of "doing something".

It might even be worse than other ideologies because it isn't based on any underlying principle. "Capitalism is bad" and "big government is bad" are one-dimensional rubriks too but at least they have clear values at their core. Centrism is just choosing conclusions relative to other positions!

Debate is overrated. "Debate" only encourages people to cling to bad arguments just to avoid the feeling of "losing." It also leads to confirmation bias rather than real research.
Addressing widespread misconceptions like this should be a top priority for journalism organizations. Instead they're obsessed with "fostering debate" — an approach that reinforces the misconceptions even more.
