Better than I expected, but how about not using it at all?

Scrapped. The one in one out policy needs to be scrapped, not just "suspended". Rather than providing a "safer alternative to channel crossings" it undermines, already weakened, protections for trafficking victims and creates a cycle of people for gangs to prey on

Our horror at the genocide in Gaza, at the mass murder of civilians on Oct 7 2023, and at today's atrocity in Manchester, comes in each case from the same, inherent part of our shared humanity. We need to assert that shared humanity as loudly as possible, and in as many practical ways as we can.

There has been an utter and continual failure to address antisemitism in recent years. I have seen it repeatedly justified. It's vile, and it has led to this. Solidarity today on Yom Kippur with my Jewish friends, and the wider community.

This is why, as soon as I could, I applied for UK citizenship: because I could see this kind of proposal coming. Otherwise, I would have happily remained on ILR. But citizenship is expensive, bureaucratic and not available to everyone.

And, let's be honest, dual citizens are probably next.
Reform will apparently pledge today that they'd abolish indefinite leave to remain - including retrospectively, to people already granted it. Obviously this is a moral abomination but it is also a practical and legal impossibility.

It's a racist lie, all of it, every word. The claims it is based on are false in fact, and repellent in morality. Merely having said it out loud without being unanimously howled down marks another moment of shameful descent for us as a nation.
As well as the fantasy £234 bn, journalists should also be clear Farage's claims most new migrants don't work, and those who do are on low wages, are entirely false.

In fact, 1.8 million recent migrants are on payrolls (others will be self employed).

“Debate Me” culture is not organic, endemic, or apolitical. This mode of high jacking discourse is and has been central to a 30-year conservative training program that has produced untold numbers of people to do this for every reason but “civil discourse”
It's wild to me how ostensibly smart people cannot/could not/will not see what is so obvious.

@mmasnick.bsky.social nails it. And my hunch is we'd be a better society if the Very Serious People with the Very Serious Ideas opened their fucking eyes.

Yes, yes you are. Stop cosplaying "legitimate concerns". When you join a far right rally, organised by well known far right leader Tommy Robinson, with a host of speakers who outright say they are far right, you are a racist. No ifs, buts or maybes. There are no excuses for being there.

There is a well used line that "elections are won from the centre" except Labour aren't fighting from the centre, they are fighting from the right. Attacks on human rights, international law, migrants, trans and non-binary individuals, the disabled etc, aren't centre ground attacks. 20/

16% of the UK population was born overseas (21/22 census)
12% of UK prisoners were born overseas
Therefore people born overseas are less likely to be in jail than people born in the UK.
That should be the headline.

Tonight’s huge climbdown is testament to the countless disabled people who have tirelessly fought these cuts. Yes, UC was a loss and there’s more to do on PIP, but let’s not underplay this: a government with a vast majority has been forced to u-turn. Because of the disabled community.
