Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, it’s probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, I’m sorry and also welcome.

As the picture of what happened yesterday comes into focus, I think the proper analogy is a country bombing us, whisking Trump and Melania away for trial elsewhere, declaring that the Democrats have no hope of governing, and leaving Vance in charge as the guy they believe they can work with.
So when can you start

TV news was never exactly great, but the day we decided that "the news" meant "people arguing about the news" instead of "reporters producing stories about the news," I lost all interest in ever consuming it again.

Since I live in an area with good abortion access, I like to try to help people living in other parts of the country have access too.

Today I gave to the Palmetto State Abortion Fund, for people in the southern US who need abortion care. If you are able, let’s see if we can help meet their goal.

I did the same in Jan 2025 with some comrades from @nycplan.org - we distributed a bunch of kits to local public libraries. Unfortunately, I don't have time to do this in 2026 but I will make some myself as per usual to hand out to people I see on the streets.

I made this for the family today (with the pecans and just a touch of whiskey, cause that’s what I was drinking) and it was a huge hit. Thanks @violanorth.bsky.social for sharing it!

had a fascinating exchange about immigration with an Englishman who seemed rather taken aback that my response to "so you don't think England should be able to maintain its own borders" was "correct", when you spend half a millennium not respecting anyone else's border you don't get to have one

This little guy had an ultrasound about a month ago, and there is something so tender watching the fur grow back in on his sweet belly.

A genuinely dispiriting thing about covering sexual violence is how often the suffering of women and children is metabolized as political point-scoring or titillating entertainment.
one lesser awful thing about the Epstein files is that genuine crimes against a huge number of children are being morphed into fuel for the influencer industrial complex who don't care about truth or accuracy and just want grist for the content mills

This really is lovely - we just saw the movie on the big screen this afternoon and were all moved to tears by it (as we always are). This essay on Mary really adds a nice nuance to Mary’s part of the story.

It looks like it's been scrubbed from every official 60 Minutes page now.

It's only a 30-second promo but here it is if you didn't get a chance to see it.

truly amazing how many different professions there are where everyone’s newest persistent headache is “AI zealots high on their own supply”
Met a 40yo gallery-ist at a party in SF. We spent most of the party talking abt the art world, but mostly what she talked abt was how most of her life now is telling AI “artists” that they are not artists, she won’t sell their “work” in her gallery, & that “prompt writer” isn’t an artistic medium.

None of the hand wringing has ever been about protecting victims and survivors. We have only ever been pawns in their playbooks.
I thought the purpose of the redactions was supposed to be to protect the victims. So why are the adult men's faces covered rather than those of the young girls? 🤔

Article 22 is a jewelry company that repurposes Vietnam War shrapnel and battlefield debris. A portion of their profits goes to the Mine Advisory Group, which works to remove landmines still left in Laos (they've removed more than 300k mines!). I like the company's "Shard" necklace collection.

America, you have spoken loud and clear: You do not like AI. But what if AI is the way to restart the world’s idea machine?
We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones.
What if the best use of AI is restarting the world’s idea machine?

I understand that a lot of folks have been misled by fear-mongering and powerful regressive voices but it’s still astonishing to me that so many have fallen for the idea that oppressively policing other people’s gender identity and expression could in any way be part of an enlightened future.

The trend precedes this but in the 90s when every sitcom started depicting marriage as a relationship between a hypercompetent, long-suffering, overburdened woman and the overgrown manchild whose antics she has to sighingly indulge … that probably wasn’t great.
