Sometimes I have seemingly contradictory feelings about janky, inconsistent & difficult mechanics in games and I think what it comes down to is how confident the games are. As in, if a game's got a janky hard mechanic it MUST force you to learn it, it can't be opt in because then it makes no sense

i haven't played a ton of sdoj but from the bit that it did, it felt like some of the patterns and enemy design were meant to actively trip up people who are used to the normal sort of flow of a cave game. which i sort of love honestly

People will yell about accessibility, but accessibility is a braille translation, not a book rewritten as if it was a simple english wikipedia entry. Sometimes the friction is needed to appreciate the art, and sometimes you have to build your fluency up to appreciate something. That's just culture!!

Difficulty has been too farmed as some weird pride/exclusion thing rather than looking at it as a tool that drives engagement with the systems of a game. Games can be too hard for no reason in the way that sometimes prose in a book can be unnecessary obtuse, but difficult prose can be NECESSARY.
