It was an unforgivable dereliction of duty that the majority of elected congressional Republican office holders were not in prison for open insurrection by March 2021.
I think it’s a reflection of their own attitudes. Both Biden and they were trying to live in a fantasy where those 4 years were a return to normalcy as opposed to the most urgent moment in American history to preserve what was left of democracy.

What's endlessly frustrating is that Trump has done nothing in the last year that he didn't openly campaign on doing if he regained the presidency, but checked-out voters didn't bother paying attention, and lots of politically informed voters refused to believe him. So much rotten ignorance.

The mistake, of the NYT & everyone else, was in participating in the obvious bad faith lie that this lawless authoritarianism was about saving money & reducing the debt. ICE agents illegally break into a woman's bathroom in a NY nutrition bar manufacturing plant. "Pull up your pants," says a male agent. The agents only had a warrant to review employer documents. They didn't have a warrant to search for, detain, or arrest anyone there.
