I’m sure that exact scenario is very likely. It would require USC being a bubble team which they haven’t been close to with Riley. They’ve been saying for years they don’t want to play the series. They found a convenient time to end it and put the blame back on ND. Fine. But let’s call it what it is

Notre Dame and USC breaking up sucks. I think the Notre Dame side deal with the Playoff had an effect here based on @danwolken.bsky.social's convincing reporting. I would now tip this to "mostly ND's fault" after the faultmeter was pointing directly at Lincoln Riley a few months ago

The most frustrating thing about all of this that I’m very sad that this series is ending, and every USC fan I know is very sad. And instead of saying it’s because conferences are two big and going ruining out of their way to ruin the sport, notre dame is catching the blame for not being in one!

Conference membership sure sounds fun.
It wasn’t a contract and nobody at the individual school level would have signed it. It was a vague agreement among commissioners that started a negotiation over a format that still hasn’t been resolved.
