So when you're doing electrical work and you finally hook everything up and turn the power on, sparks are a good sign right? It means all the components made friends with each other!

The internet is all "don't scruff your cats" but when Oz goes from lovingly rubbing his face against my chin to suddenly deciding to go CHOMP on the side of my neck, you bet I'm going to terminate that behaviour in the most efficient way possible.

Sorry to all England men's cricket fans waking up to... that. 🙃

Even more sorry to the very patient Americans who are close enough to me to have to hear all about it as it happened.

Sometimes you’re in the mood to order that new dish you’ve never tried before, other times you just want to order the thing you’ve hand a hundred times before. Both are valid. But if you find yourself eating nothing but pop tarts, maybe you need to consider broadening your horizons more.
People are harshing on some “diverse reading challenge” thing that’s going around, and I get it, but looking at what you read and asking yourself “what isn’t represented here?” is imo a good and healthy practice

Essentially, I think that LLM-generated dialogue only makes sense if you believe that the product of writing is words.

But the product of writing isn't words, any more than the product of justice is prisoners, or the product of love is weddings. The product of writing is meaning.

If the bills to criminalise gender-affirming care for minors were genuinely coming from a desire to protect children, there'd be provisions in them to support any kids already receiving care.

Instead, cold turkey.

Once again, LLMs are useful in identifying practices that need to change. If citation-as-signaling is expected in your field, such that the citation is not a record of any actual engagement, then stop that practice. It is not providing any intellectual benefit. It is human-produced slop.
I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at least—AI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if we’d not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagement—you can only cite a fake paper if you’re not in the habit of reading the papers you cite
Do not cite an academic paper unless you’ve read it

Republicans voting against the felony national trans youth healthcare ban were Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), Gabe Evans (CO), Michael Lawler (NY), Mike Kennedy (UT).

Dems voting FOR the felony ban were Henry Cueller (TX), Vincente Gonzalez (TX), Don Davis (NC).

3 NVs on both sides.

Shameful.
Had the three Dems who voted for this held the line and voted no, they could have blocked it.

Relieved to see no CA names on here but wow, deeply disappointed in some of those names. Sheldon Whitehouse?? :( He doesn't even have the excuse of needing to keep his constituents happy like the GA senators do.
Here are the 28 Dem Senators who voted to advance the first federal ban on trans athletes & a federal definition of sex that would make trans & intersex people non-existent: Angela Alsobrooks (MD), Tammy Baldwin (WI), Richard Blumenthal (CT), Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE), Chris Coons (DE), ->
By a vote of 76-23, S 1071 passes the motion to proceed to the motion to concur. Won't know who voted for this until the roll call is uploaded, but safe to say it passed with the support of at least 24 members of the Democratic caucus. (Rand Paul probably voted nay and Steve Daines has been absent).

The anti-Semitic mass shooting in Australia will cause a national conversation and policy change. We know this because the 1996 Port Arthur massacre led to significant restrictions on guns.
The shooting at Brown will do nothing. We know this because it occurred on the anniversary of Sandy Hook.

Very impressed with Robin Ince's courageous stand here: even for a successful and established comedian, burning bridges with the BBC is a huge and career-altering step. The solidarity with trans people is very much appreciated ❤️
Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

I'm privileged to call Robin a friend, and as such, have seen behind the curtains with what went on with Monkey Cage. When BBC bosses say they don't recognise his version of events, I was being told of them by Robin in real time. This stuff has been going on for YEARS.
I'm heartbroken for him.
