New favorite owl just dropped. Look how adorable these night birbs are. 🦉
Not all owls say "who".

The saw-whet owl may have gotten its name from the resemblance of its call to a saw being sharpened on a whet-stone.

Seems like a better name than "3rd-grade-recorder-practice owl."

As much as I liked Dr. Hannon, my undergraduate physics classes would have been much more entertaining if Tilda had been my professor.
y'all I am so fucking good at writing multiple choice questions

The problems on all my projects just keep piling up. [incoherent, profanity-laced muttering]
Two of my projects are for one customer, and they've both suffered delays. One of them is on the test stand, but there is a technical problem stopping us from testing. The other, I just learned, will need to go back on the same test stand to have data re-taken. It's a $280k nightmare.

Sunday's fat-bike ride started out really well. I was perfectly dressed for the weather (about 29 °F or -2 °C). The 3" (75 mm) of fresh snow on top of the older iced-over snow was beautiful and provided a fun challenge both in grip and rolling resistance. And the entire forest was beautiful.

Kermit has been gravel biking since way before it was cool.

This mini-ratchet kit is my favorite multitool to carry on the bike, but I also have another set to keep at home, because it's just so useful for getting into small spaces. Perhaps more importantly, look how adorably tiny the ratchet is!

What an absolute fucking cunt
Donald Trump just removed Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth from the list of free entry days at national parks.

They are being replaced with Trump’s birthday.

My riding buddy was out on the trail with me and was feeling pretty strong for parts of the ride.

It’s times like this that I’m most happy to like somewhere that gets real snow.

Rides like today’s also make me wish I’d bought a fat bike when I first moved here.

I feel you, Murderbot.
'I remember every word ever said to me.' That was a lie. Who would want that? Most of it I delete from permanent memory.

Here's a great thread on a few of the ways hippopotamuses are weird and interested, starting with their testes. Thanks to @lilbluegem.bsky.social for sharing this thread with me.
I have been doing entirely too much earnest posting about deep things recently, I need to do a proper thread about hippo testicles or something just to keep myself sane.

Oh by the way hippos have migratory testicles.

It was cold but beautiful out on the trail today.

I also put my new rain shell, which is in my signature bright blue, to use for the first time.

There's a couple reasons so many IWW songs are set to the tunes of hymns and one is that the Salvation Army Band would show up and try to stop workers organizing by playing hymns to drown out speeches, so the Wobblies came up with words so they could sing along. SA has been trash all along.
It's that giving time of year again, so this is a reminder that no matter how they try to dress it up, the Salvation Army is not a charity.
