Europhile. Hate Brexit . Want to rejoin the EU eventually but will be happy for a better relationship in first instance. We need PR. Worried about climate change trying to do my bit. Still just about work for the NHS. Moved from twitter/X also on threads

This is exactly why Mr Shepherd is such an excellently drawn character. Even many Austen readers would be hard-pressed to remember his name.

Unlike Dickens' caricatures like Mr Tulkinghorn, a good practical lawyer should not even be noticeable.
Well, I would because Persuasion is my favourite Austen yet I can't remember anything at all about Me Shepherd.

(Lawyers and the law strike me as a big deal in all C19th and early C20th fiction.

I suppose the hazard in terms of both property and criminal cases was as great as it's ever been.)

2025 comes to an end.

It’s been a strong year for deployment and innovation, but a worrying one for energy politics.

Moves like the US pause on offshore wind show how quickly progress can be undermined by polarised debate.

Here’s hoping 2026 brings calmer, more evidence-based energy policymaking.

This was the government's position on "human rights defender" Abd El-Fattah in 2023, while Robert Jenrick sat in cabinet, Cleverly was Foreign Sec, and Sunak was PM - a position confirmed no fewer than ten times on the floor of both the Commons and the Lords.

Did Bob object back then? Thought not.

For the last month (arguably year) Ukraine and Europe have been effectively negotiating with someone who claims to be their ally over a deal that they find entirely unacceptable and that the other side of the war has already rejected.

Take a moment to think about the performative insanity of that.

Rather than asking who is going to inherit Trump mantle, in year we could be talking about which candidates can escape the odious distinction of having been connected to him
