In early April last year, during a visit with someone important to me, the topic turned to politics. Neither of us is shy about getting into these things with one another, and never have been. Over time I have grown more selective about which battles I pick, but in this case I thought I was picking a relatively easy one: the January 6 insurrection. After all, I remembered what he had said at the time, which was an unqualified denunciation of what was, in his words, Donald Trump inciting a riot. I assumed our disagreement was going to merely be over whether it was wise to prosecute Trump. I was wrong. Saying that he had simply been misled by the media initially, that with information we’ve learned since he’d come to change his view, he completely dismissed the significance of the events of January 6 as anything but a propaganda coup for Trump’s opposition due to the optics of it. The “only person who was killed” was “on the protesters’ side,” and therefore any supposed danger the “protesters” posed, or the laws they broke, could be dismissed. The relentless physical assaults on law enforcement at the scene went unmentioned (never mind the circumstances under which the “person who was killed” was shot). And “it isn’t as though Trump said to do an insurrection.” This is, of course, the kind of logic you see with Holocaust denial and other saying-it-but-not-quite-saying it rhetorical games. Indeed, outright dictators mocking the weakness of democracy never actually say that their own country is not one, instead they speak in euphemisms about “the West” or simply “liberalism.”

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.
A Twitter account called Ivanka News tweets an AI image of a young woman wearing Muslim garb. The woman is holding a sign that says "I came here illegally. Should I be deported?" Ivanka News writes: What is your response to this person ?? In the "About this account" tab, it appears the account is based in Nigeria An account called MAGA scope writes: Who, in your view is the great enemy of the United States? Communism, Islam, Democratic Party, or Satan? The account is based in Nigeria. An account called MAGA Nadine writes: You go to work and find this. What would you do? The attached pic is an AI image that shows a microwave. The microwave has a sign that says "For religious reasons, this microwave is now making halal food only." The account is based in Morocco. An account called America First posts an AI image of Tulsi Gabbard. They wrote: How would you rate your trust in Tulsi Gabbard on a scale of 1-10?

THREAD: Judge Ellis is the first federal judge to review extensive body cam video of DHS's actions in Chicago. She finds that DHS *repeatedly* misled the public and made claims that were disproven by agents' own videos.

I'll go through some of the most egregious ones here.
II. Credibility The Court next addresses the credibility of the parties’ evidence and witnesses. After reviewing all the evidence submitted to the Court and listening to the testimony elicited at the preliminary injunction hearing, during depositions, and in other court proceedings, the Court finds Defendants’ evidence simply not credible. [FN 6] Plaintiffs submitted a mountain of evidence, providing the Court with over eighty declarations, numerous videos and articles, and other evidence. Defendants did not rebut anything that Plaintiffs set forth in their declarations or testimony, even with BWC footage. [FN 6] In another case considering some of the same evidence presented to this Court, another court in this district also found that the perceptions of certain of Defendants’ declarants, such as Hott and Parra, were not reliable. See Illinois v. Trump, No. 25-cv-12174, 2025 WL 2886645, at *5 (N.D. Ill. Oct. 10, 2025) (noting a “troubling trend of Defendants’ declarants equating protests with riots and a lack of appreciation for the wide spectrum that exists between citizens who are observing, questioning, and criticizing their government, and those who are obstructing, assaulting, or doing violence”), motion to stay denied in part, 155 F.4th 929 (7th Cir. 2025).
