This demonstrates why I harp on the harm done by narratives and politics that seek tolerance over acceptance. A society that tolerates queer people practically encourages the mindset of delivering empty platitudes toward queerness while outright rejecting its real manifestations.
I do have to point out that even with a more-accepting society, there is a gulf between "I am okay with queers" and "I am okay with my kid being a queer". People can support LGBT rights in the abstract and then get spooked when their own precious cinnamon roll makes them a "non-traditional family".
