Other countries have gone along with a surprising (to me anyway!) number of Trump's demands, but I think Greenland goes beyond what they will accept, and if he keeps pushing it many other deals could unravel.

This is the guy who sheltered Orbán in the EPP for years and then had the brass neck to pretend to be standing up for European values against autocratisation. And now he wants a rinse and repeat?
The EU’s centrist powers need to move to the right to reflect the new political reality, the leader of the European People’s Party Manfred Weber has told in an exclusive interview with POLITICO.
Europe shifted right — it’s time centrists do too, says Manfred Weber
EPP chief says he still wants to work with traditional allies, but they need to adapt.

The logical problems with PW are so well known they don't need much rehearsing. It's not so much an argument as a vulnerability report on human belief formation that explains why certain kinds of religious claims tend to spread virally.

I hadn't known until I saw this writeup from @friendlyatheist.com that Scott Adams announced a very transactional deathbed conversion to Christianity, which I find fascinating because it makes very clear what's wrong with Pascal's Wager *theologically*. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/scott-adam...
Scott Adams’ deathbed conversion to Christianity shouldn’t be taken seriously
The "Dilbert" creator reduced Christianity to Pascal’s Wager, and plenty of conservatives applauded the con

Agreed with 90% of the piece but doubts crept in with this passage. Not sure a regime can erode basic state and economic capacity with few consequences

These problems can destabilise a regime over time or generate civil conflict if succession is botched once the leader is gone

Hungary is not an Autarchic Sovereignist closed economy!

If they copy Orban then they are copying a vibe and empty slogans without any relation to reality

The Hu economic 'Nationalism' was fed by infinite subsidies from Brussels. There is nothing to replicate here outside sloganeering vibes

The economy in HU is in the shithole now precisely because its effectively the sole EU state not to receive the COVID recovery funds due to Orban being a thief
One thing I wonder is if the Trump/MAGA folks have not perhaps miscalculated in thinking that no one will very much mind when they 'downshift' the US economy to be more like Hungary or Russia.

Crucially, Hungary and Russia's economies never ran well, even before their current regimes.

These “chess masters of the great game” twats are nearly always fucking American or Russian something.

There’s no place for Ireland or Estonia or Palestine in how these people see the world.

My entire reaction to that way of thinking is basically just “die imperialist scum”. I demand better sorry.

Idk if it’s just being from a small country that was only part of someone else’s empire, but the neo-realist framing that Russia gets a veto on any country other than Russia joining the EU because it’s a former imperial territory and “great power” dynamics must be respected is just revolting to me.

Tariffs were another area of policy continuity between Biden and Trump that were, on the whole, bad. I understand the rationale for some strategic things especially against China specifically, but it was definitely broader than that.
US imports of solar panels have now fallen to the lowest levels in two years amidst increased tariffs on imports from Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, & Thailand—and they're likely to fall further as additional tariffs were announced earlier this week
