Normies are the bulwark of democracy
It's incredibly demoralizing to constantly see the highest institutions of government and academia and the most important and widely seen news outlets knuckle under one after another, but then to see the gulf between that and the bravery of communities and neighbors and teachers - that's something

I would like to vote for someone promising to remove the armed militias terrorizing our communities and children from our streets and prosecuting the offenders
An official from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis told MPR News that armed U.S. Border Patrol goons came onto school property during dismissal Wednesday and began tackling people; they handcuffed two staff members and released chemical weapons on bystanders.

The thing I always come back to is how many people never despaired against longer odds, and how arrogant it would be to put myself above them.

Perhaps now people will stop wishcasting about the US military refusing illegal orders. That's not a thing that happens. The 100% compliance rate with using civilian boats for target practice was a bit of a tell.

Gift link for a fascinating & characteristically problematic NYTimes article:

What's problematic is the wholesale importation (pun intended) of the empty-headed zero-sum Trumpian view of trade. China sells & finances African solar, which is bad because...Africa won't build solar factories? C'mon

Cylinder seals from ancient Mesopotamia — tiny objects carved with images and text — were early signatures.

People rolled them over wet clay tablets and envelopes, and they tell us a lot about identity and authenticity. Interesting, brief read by Serdar Yalçin theconversation.com/signatures-m...

Yep.
suspect a big reason why many academics and others who work in areas where getting facts RIGHT is key are disinterested in using LLMs for research:

they’ve tried it, they keep noticing major errors in output, and they conclude that having to verify all that doesn’t actually save them time.

In Chicago, a Nativity scene features a zip-tied baby Jesus and Roman centurions in "ICE" vests.

Near Boston, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus are absent from a Nativity scene, replaced with a sign reading "ICE was here."

It's all part of growing religious blowback to ICE. religionnews.com/2025/12/05/i...
ICE Nativity scenes: Churches reimagine Christmas story amid deportations
(RNS) — 'We know that Jesus was born into a Roman imperial occupation, and pretty much immediately becomes a refugee in Egypt, has to flee and faces political violence,' the Rev. Michael Woolf said.

Interesting new working paper that studies chains of movers after the construction of a new apartment building in Honolulu.

Paper finds that the project resulted in the opening up other, lower cost, housing on the island, benefiting the housing market overall.

My hot take is that this holiday is great and gratitude fucking rules. The shittiest people in the world want you to feel despair and they don’t know shit about feeling thankful. Nurture this superpower, bring goodness out into the light, and shame the pricks like the devils they are.

one theory I have about why society is the way it is &people are behaving so irrationally is that a LOT of powerful people (and many non-powerful people) are aware they've done things they should be ashamed of, and shame tends to be unpleasant enough that we distort reality to avoid acknowledging it
