At what point, I wonder, will people realize that he's not a luminary genius, he's a cheap car salesman who lies like a rug and who got lucky and used carnival hucksterism to convince his investors he was invaluable.

In other news, last night I rediscovered Beyoncé's "Irreplaceable".

A pleasure to share. Seriously: my concern is that (as mentioned in the post) writers still learning their craft are being warned off testing a technique that, because some like to frame it as “less fun”, could save them a TON of stress and grief. We want MORE of their work, and with less pain. 😀

Lovely profile of a fantastic filmmaker, alongside everything else.
Cannot believe that I got to profile an extraordinary filmmaker, who happens to be the mother of NYC’s new mayor, and think about intersections of art and politics, and how familial love might produce a buffer against the corrosive politics and cynicism of our time. My story about Mira Nair:

God, no, NOTHING LIKE THOSE. *So* many people have thought outlining meant “like those” and staggered away in horror. Correctly! …*I* mean like this. https://www.dianeduane.com/outofambit/2020/07/25/outlining-one-writers-approach/

This is a super-cool premise for a game, a poignant inversion of the Tomb Raider-style fantasy.
Johannesburg’s Nyamakop Studios turns African artifact repatriation into a bold heist game.

Protagonist Nomali and a crew of ordinary citizens reclaim 70 real-life artifacts taken during the colonial era.

The 30-person dev team includes people from Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Tanzania.

So many of the horses on gradient.horse feel like cave-art paintings. It's fun to watch them go by.

Read this and then get the book: “Bad Bunny showed us that when he said, “We are Americans” at the Grammys, he wasn’t merely referring to citizenship status. He was challenging this country’s ever-narrowing definitions of who is — and is not — American.” #GiftLink

Ok friends, final push:

We got married, and it was wonderful!

I'd like to spread the good news around to some wonderful science, conservation, and education charities I love.

Please consider making a donation in honor of David and Eileen's wedding:

direct link for funding said anthology!
I would really like to write the story I've been solicited to write for this collection. (Space opera! Fashion! Politics!)

But it needs to get funded for that to happen.
We have 12 days to go on our crowdfund for WHAT ELEGANT STARS and still need to raise about $7k. We've just added a reward "add-on" for a short story critique with editor dave ring if that would be of interest.

We also still have two Benefactor Rewards at $1k that would be incredibly impactful.

"This is a good start, but where are the tests?"
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

"Will this make the reader throw up in their mouth a little?"

This I believe: if we really want to heal society, we need to get rid of the belief that scientists are really just high priests of Science, the conviction that corporations should get to do whatever they want, and the mortal terror that someone might get help they "don't need".

Alright, where are my gifted kids at? You were smart and you never had to study and then you went to college and suddenly had to learn a new skillset overnight, that everybody else had years to learn, or flame out spectacularly?

That’s what talent is like.
In my experience, talent is a *detriment* to learning.

I didn't have to practice early on so I *didn't know how*. I didn't start to learn how to practice until my 30s! (When much of my life was taken up with parenting, so I didn't have time!)

I didn't start to improve as a musician until my 40s!
I'm going to say this again in case you haven't heard this one: I was a talented writer and it did *nothing whatsoever* because I hadn't put in the work, and I put in the work for ten years (subtracting the bit where I had to quit for my mental health) to write Witchmark

talent alone could *never*

I live just off Kalamazoo St. (named, naturally, for the city) and as someone with a Classics background, I wonder occasionally what καλαμαζόω might mean.

(Usually I settle on "good omen", from combining καλός "beautiful; useful; good" and θαυμάζω "I wonder, I am astonished".)

With the caveat that I don't read Rascal regularly or follow tabletop news particularly closely: I feel like it's a bad sign that every time I've heard about Rascal, it's in the context of "they fucked up the reporting on this issue and it's hurting people".

Envious of the people posting their 40s selfies today. I'm 46, two years of HRT has done almost nothing for me, and there hasn't been a day in the last 40 years when I haven't disliked my appearance (to put it mildly). I wish i could find the self-love I see others enjoying.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

Iron Age forts simply weren't designed to deal with artillery barrages. It's a real flaw.
Following the circuit of Flowers Barrow Iron Age hillfort in Dorset is not recommended as there's occasional unexploded ordnance hereabouts 😱
