A frog would not have been my first choice but I reckon it’s very smart in potentially confusing them being taunted by their beloved pepe…

The consensus of macroeconomists globally is that the techbros and Trump are driving the markets towards a Crédit Mobilier-type meltdown in which they will profit massively, but the financial system will be devastated. www.ft.com/content/fe47...

a fortunate quirk is that doing food and medical support for impoverished children, foreign and domestic, *also* is about the biggest bang it is possible to get for our buck.

so you can analyze aid on a moral basis or a realpolitik basis and you get the same answer: we should do it
juliaazari.bsky.social
Here's the thing. I am a lucky person and pay a fair bit in taxes. I can think of no better use for my tax dollars than feeding children, because I think all people are equally deserving of basic humanity.

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

Humans evolved a cognitive 'social proof' system for establishing what's true (if enough of the people around me believe something, I'll go along) and media fragmentation + social media has completely and totally hijacked it

Feels like AI will only make this worse

"no in the future people will cryptographically verify what's true and-" no they will not. People are fucking stupid.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

the financial district is too funny … tell me why every old office building has a name etched in stone like The Amalgamated Steamship, Corn Refining and Horse Insurance Co., 1888

and now it’s a WeWork with a salad place

A lotta folks have been warning for YEARS that govt subsidies encouraging US farmers to invest near-exclusively in two crops (soybeans and corn) could have catastrophic consequences.

Most were thinking climate-change implications (making these crops ungrowable) but here’s a self-inflicted one!

For the uninitiated: The pope being this direct and explicit to U.S. bishops about how to respond to a domestic policy happening in real time is…unusual.

Pope Leo told U.S. bishops visiting him at the Vatican on Wednesday that they should firmly address how immigrants are being treated by President Donald Trump's hardline policies, attendees said, in the latest push by the pontiff on the issue. For @reuters.com:

waymo has a limited rollout because it is a bad business, not a bad technology. just depreciating $60k worth of optics per car is comparably expensive to paying a guy $10/hr to drive it.
bluespacecanary.bsky.social
It's fascinating to me that there's a whole "AI skeptic" misinformation ecosystem out there that somehow continues to deny that Waymo exists. Like, this is easy to fact check! Waymo runs publicly-available service in 5 cities, you can just go look up how it works and see it's not planned routes!
A bluesky post with the user's handle cropped out: "In 2015, I was told, confidently, that AI would end human drivers in the trucking industry w/in 5 years.

[Begin my highlight]10 years later, and there’s what-some experimental cabs rolling around a few cities in heavily-engineered preset routes?[end my highlight]

Not to mention the fact that the AI industry itself is Enron on heroin."

The global rise in long-term yields on gov't bonds and the rise in gold prices are interconnected. Markets fear that high and rising debt burdens will be monetized and fiat currencies debased. So you get higher risk premia on gov't debt and a growing flight to safety into gold...

The U.S. soy market problem is going to cause massive problems with corn in coming years, as soy is rotated in the same fields with corn to keep corn rootworm populations low.

If farms switch to corn only, we’ll see pest resurgences and increased pesticide use.

I’ve been thinking… I think the concept of “notifications” might be one of the worst things to happen in technology.

It’s overused by every piece of tech and software. Incessant engagement bait with so much noise and so little signal.

You want to fix the ACA? Easy.

Strip Congress of their diamond public health plans and pay them the median American income: $41,400 a year.

No insider trading, no perks, and dock every vacation day after seven.

Watch how fast they fix healthcare then.
