I'm totally baffled abt the markets. Where is Capital? Trump is messing w/ govt data; imposing tariffs; flirting w/ default; meddling in corporate management.

Where are the CEO complaints? The bond vigilantes? Where are billionaire hedge funders who trade on good data? Was Capital's power a mirage?
"Antoni is the chief economist at the Heritage Foundation. He has been a relentless booster of Trump’s policies on social media. And he has demonstrated time and again that he does not understand economic statistics." With embarrassing examples from trade, employment, LFP, UI.... [Dominic Pino, NRO]

As I detailed in WHITE FLIGHT, segregationists in Atlanta absolutely loved public services -- buses and trolleys, parks and pools, golf courses and tennis courts, etc. -- right until they were forced to desegregate and "stolen" from them. They abandoned them and built up private alternatives.

I wrote something about how we're seeing the rise of the online "alpha male." This is someone who speaks in clipped imperatives, squeezes into tight suits, and performs for our feed. They present a vision of masculinity shaped by politics, tech, and 100 years of cultural history 🧵

Men with Peter Pan syndrome avoid adult responsibilities. They’re the 40 yr olds with a 20-something party mindset - fleeing commitment but craving admiration. Overall, their lives lack depth and they often gravitate towards much younger ppl. It’s not about being youthful. They don’t wanna grow up.

If I have any life advice –
Earth is immense. Thunderstorms above eclipse any idea of human scale, impossible to comprehend. But, above it, is a clear bluesky. Light, bearing down, intended for you. The storm will pass. And there will be two beacons bathing you in warmth – the Sun, and Taylor Swift.

A lot of people are in career ambiguity with everything that’s going on. Whether you’re interviewing, trying to get a promo, or just trying to survive, deriving influence is important.

Here are some tips in case it’s helpful, based on some some observations:

My favorite question to ask in order to learn this is “if you were in my shoes, how would you, as a new hire, go about being impactful at the company?”

It’s a great question because it’s disarming and the honest + politically safe answer is still informative. Plus they might not even know!

The CEO of Shopify just published an internal memo about AI usage. Two notable

1. AI usage questions will be added to the performance and peer review process.

2. Requests for more headcount or resources must include justification for why AI can’t do it instead.

I’m going to try to explain why, while I understand anger toward the parents whose unvaccinated children died of measles, I don’t share it. IMO it is a tragedy. My reasons for this hinge on 2 main points:

1. Public health requires the public

2. We can’t ignore the social determinants of health

So. I think it's important to share news about what's happening. But I'm trying to square that with the other reality that it contributes to doomscrolling.

I think we need to start putting these things into context and talking about what we are learning or what we should take away from it.
NEW—After a day of uncertainty on where agents took Tufts student Rumeysa Ozturk, she appears to be in a Louisiana facility.

1400+ miles from Somerville, Massachusetts, where she was taken.

A judge ordered to not take her out of state without 48 hour notice. She was detained last night.

This is absolutely incredible. Not the incompetence of adding a journalist. We already know they are incompetent. But there is so much information about who these people are packed into these texts.
In 25 years of covering national security, I’ve never seen a story like this: Senior Trump officials discussed planning for the U.S. attack on Yemen in a Signal group--and inadvertently added the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...
The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans
U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.

Last year I wrote about how the portfolio I manage myself outperformed my financial planner’s. So far this year, theirs is kicking my butt because it is internationally diversified.

Using Vanguard ETFs as an example, VOO (US top companies) is flat YTD while VXUS (international stocks) is +8.5%.
Investors spy the dawn of a tectonic shift away from US markets
A historic global trade war, a proposed $1.2 trillion European fiscal bazooka and the emergence of China as tech race leader are upending global flows of money, marking a potential turning point for investor capital away from the United States.

20 years ago I knew a guy who worked part time, minimum wage, as a dishwasher.

He was able to afford rent and a car (both shitty but functional), concerts, weed, etc.

It's interesting to think of how that kind of dirtbag lifestyle is mostly just gone.
