For some reason, Trump said his tariffs would bring costs down for Americans. But the data shows what you already know: Americans are bearing 96% of the tariff burden. That's $200 billion coming straight out of our pockets because of him.

Essentially, what stops abductions is when crowds outnumber the masked kidnappers. When people aggressively follow ICE with whistles and horns, crowds are ready to show up. If they show up fast enough, ICE leaves and a family is not broken. (People here understand the stakes).

Another question I came here with was: how effective are the whistles and honking? Does it stop abductions? And the answer is, surprisingly to my cynical self, yes, and often. I have talked to so many people who have successfully interrupted kidnappings.

Low-income families across the country are discovering in the checkout line that their SNAP benefits have been stolen & they can't pay for their groceries. It's devastating.

Yet USDA keeps pushing back the timeline for regulations to make EBT cards more secure to prevent this.

Also: ice storms actually can't occur in air masses that are uniformly very cold! Ice accumulation requires an above-freezing "warm nose" that melts falling snowflakes, plus a shallow surface freezing layer that causes falling raindrops to instantly re-freeze on contact.

In fact, this airmass is not (by any meaningful metric I can discern) record cold in the first place. It's certainly very cold, even by January Midwestern standards, but it's something we should expect every ~5-15 years in our present climate. Unusual, but far from unprecedented.

The major winter storm and cold outbreak in the central & eastern U.S. this weekend will be most notable not for record cold, nor heavy snowfall, but instead for very heavy ice accumulations that will cause widespread/severe electrical infrastructure and travel disruptions.
