Not just British history either. Hard to find an example of any democracy doing something this extreme, anywhere, in modern times. Idi Amin in 1971 is one of the rare close analogies and he was no one's idea of a democrat.
Opinion | "The Conservatives, seemingly without even really realising it, have put forward one of the most extreme anti-immigration policies issued by any political party in British history", writes Ian Dunt trib.al/Eph9xPO

Christ, I know there are more serious issues but this really seems like the absolute nadir for the Guardian. WTF is wrong with people?

this is objectively true. the march on washington, for instance, was about 250k. this isn't a criticism of the movement. this is a LESSON TO LEARN about why focus and clarity can matter more than raw numbers.

Likely many of us have felt it ourselves but the tendency when upset about an issue to feel anger at those on the same side for not being despairing enough is bizarre and fascinating. Some amazing examples here in response to @jdportes.bsky.social who tirelessly combats anti-migrant racism and lies
Personal note: went to (some) of the countermarch yesterday, and then watched TV coverage of both.

@sundersays.bsky.social is right that the far-right/racists on the main march are a (small) minority whose numbers are not growing.

It's the apparent paralysis of the majority that scares me. [1/n]

I'm not sure this does explain the most egregious examples: Gaza, rhetoric on migrants, and benefits.
1. Researching this week’s column, I felt that I understood at last just why, on so many issues – benefits, Gaza, environmental and planning laws, anti-protest laws, bank deregulation, fiscal rules etc - Labour is out-Torying the Tories. Why it has become so cruel, so destructive and so spineless. 🧵

ICYMI: A minimum tax on billionaires mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/06/a-mi...
The super rich pay a much lower % of their income in tax than almost everyone else. The 'Zucman tax' prevents that in a way that nearly everyone should agree is fair, so why not do this rather than cutting welfare?
