Notably missing from the AI Strategy Task Force, whose month-long 'national sprint' begins today: a librarian, a researcher in science or technology studies, or seemingly a *single person* who would look at gen AI tools with a critical eye.

Whenever I can, I take students into the shelves and we browse. I start with searching the catalogue so they get practice using it, then walk them to that specific book, and then show them the entire section and encourage them to browse around. They always pick more than just that 1 book.
I think there is a direct line from my fights about the value of browsable physical collections (which have largely been decimated in academic libraries) to LLM summarizations and brainstorming/searching offloading.

AI is just the latest, albeit dangerous in its own ways, step on this path.

If you’ve never read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, do yourself a favor and read it during the holidays. It’s one of the greatest books ever written, it takes less than two hours to read and once you finish, you can say you’ve read one book by Charles Dickens.

Cleaner air isn't a personal health choice, it's something that needs the broad mandate of the state to accomplish.

But we'll never get there as a society (despite the tech being relatively simple), because we've been brainwashed by a neoliberal health ideology that's centred on individual choices.
Putting clean air infrastructure into the built environment (in schools, daycare, long term care homes, shopping centres, offices, airplanes, buses, taxis, cruise ships...) is more important than ever.

Because giving people the "choice" has led to lower vaccination rates and a refusal to mask.

Chris Kluwe @chriswarcraft.bsky.social was the 1st person I followed on Twitter, and I’m not a game person or (the HORROR) a Vikings fan. He’s a genuinely good guy. Who was arrested for no good reason. What’s going to happen to the next protestor dragged off who doesn’t have Chris’s privilege?

It’s The Breakfast Club. And if I’m being honest it’s more like 90 %. And same goes for any of those John Hughes movies of that era. Not especially proud of that. Think I need to go read a book now or something.

You've just taken stills from videos instead of posting the actual videos. It's lazy. Make an effort.
