New: cops used Flock AI-enabled cameras to monitor No Kings protests around the country. Also monitored No Hands protests and protests against DOGE.

"Should serve as a warning of how it may be used in the future to suppress dissent."

Trump's line about the murdered Jamal Khashoggi—"A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about....Things happen."—is truly heinous. It's evil.

The president of the United States said that. In the nauseatingly gilded Oval Office. Next to the dictator who ordered the killing.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

A reminder that seven years ago almost to the day, the CIA determined that Mohammed Bin Salman ordered the killing of @washingtonpost.com journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

I hired and worked with Jamal for a year.

According to more than a dozen college and uni students, “the Canvas outage threw off their schedules, preventing them from not just submitting and viewing assignments but also from participating in-class activities, contacting professors, and accessing the textbooks and other materials…”
The AWS Outage Was a Nightmare for College Students
The outage impacted online learning platform Canvas, which is used by half of college students across the US, leaving many unable to access course materials or contact professors.

Peanuts considering what has been built on the back of these works. Good… but peanuts all the same.
I’m seeing reports that they have settled at $3,000 per work, and if so, I need to see the settlement amount

Teens calling Idaho's suicide hotline are being told they can't proceed with the conversation without parental consent. Many of the callers are then hanging up.

Idaho approved a strict parental consent law last year.

This is so important. We can't just allow frankly evil technologies to dominate us unchecked. The party should be over for Silicon Valley but which countries have the guts to actually pull the plug or regulate them into the insignificance they should be?
Western leaders have appeased Donald Trump since he returned to power, only to be hit with new demands after every concession.

On Tuesday, Trump declared economic war on countries that regulate its tech companies. It’s time for the world to break from the US and aggressively target Silicon Valley.
World leaders must stop appeasing Donald Trump
Conceding to Trump’s demands only guarantees new threats. It’s time to reject the US and its tech companies.

It really feels to me that a strong approach to the AI panic in education really is just... smaller classes, not treating education like an assembly line, and making lessons matter.

It isn’t just AI code. I’m responsible for strategy at my company and just last week the CTO booked a 1:1 with me to ensure I know how to use and am using the deep research capabilities in our partners firm’s latest LLM. It is a full-on professional expectation.
I get the impression AI code is going to be to programming what concrete is to industry. Absolutely indispensable, dependent on trained specialist workers unless you enjoy risking your future, & only the beginning of the story except in certain applications/styles, which can be very divisive

Btw. about 6 months ago the Anthropic CEO said that by now 50% of all code would be written by LLMs.

How does that prediction relate to the reality we all live in and what does that say about his ability to make predictions about the future?

I'm not reflexively anti-technology. I was always that guy at my uni who was eager to try out some new thing that might be a cool new way for students to learn. But those new things were just tools we could choose to use, they weren't the entire ocean in which we had no choice but to swim.

It's my experience (from 25 yrs of teaching) that "learning management" tools like Canvas do nothing to facilitate student learning & make my job MORE, not less, time consuming. That additional time I put in contributes zero to improving the student experience. But Canvas gets our money regardless.
