We can't really say this enough...

> Anastasia Berg [at UCL Irvine] said that new research — and what she's hearing directly from colleagues across various industries — shows that employees who heavily rely on AI are losing core skills at a startling rate.

whenever anyone proclaims that they are against something which appears to be objectively good for society i just assume that it's because they actively wish harm upon the poor.
i’ll never understand why public transit haters discourage use of public transit and want to defund it. if less people use cars the roads will have less traffic and you’ll get to where you want faster with your own car. stupid people

One of the best Saturday Night Live sketches is “Toonces: the Cat who could drive a car” where a cat puppet drives a car off a cliff and that’s the beginning and end of the joke but they went with it for five years and it worked because really that’s all you need to do

Love watching this reemergence of the spirit of the early web. Especially since it appears to be largely driven by younger generations who are already realizing the internet they've been handed is a miserable place lacking in community. So they've taken matters into their own hands.

The Championship Maths are super simple this week. One race to go, that will decide it all.

This is how many points the rest of the grid need to gain on Norris in Abu Dhabi to take the title:

Verstappen: 12.0 points
Piastri: 16.0 points

Fascinating stuff (and yeah, obligatory note that AI is a stupid label, this isn't an LLM etc)

But once again, this is also about substituting mere prediction for explanation. Understanding is overhead to capital, predictions are all it cares about. Capital is trying to get rid of science

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

my “AI is over” anecdote is that my wife was hired over the summer to write scripts for a big tech company explaining how to use their AI tools and after many rounds of revisions, the latest notes said “we’re finding a lot of AI fatigue among our users” and to remove all references to AI
Anecdotally on twitter seeing a big shift the last few days from every AI slop account saying every other creative field is “over” and they’re in control now to now posting about how nobody likes them and it’s not fair and they’ll persevere and real artists respect and uplift eachother
