I try to do the same thing. It's so easy to do and it often means the world to the recipient.

I started doing this a few years ago--when I read a great scholarly article, for example, I will drop a note to the author telling them how good I think it is. Especially if the author is a junior person. It takes two minutes and is a nice affirmation.
