I've been joking that I made a wish on a monkey's paw to not have to go back home for the holidays bc it's never relaxing traveling all around the GTA to see everyone, and my wish was granted with a broken ankle, but joke's on you monkey's paw, I've been having a lovely relaxing time

let's all take a moment to remember that in the 80s Ferris Bueller "Oh Yeah" song by Yello, the singer is canonically a little fat creature who is simply living his best life and chilling

petition to annul recent anti-trans legislation in Alberta and Saskatchewan shielded by notwithstanding clause. Canadians please sign!
There's a petition - majority of signatures coming from Alberta of all places - calling on Parliament to do exactly that.

It's already blown well past its 500 signature minimum to be taken to the floor, but the more names on it, the more scare it'll put in the MPs

these tools have been shown to have racial biases so many times, over the course of many years at this point, and yet institutions keep blindly adopting them and forcing them on us

Is there anything better than waking up at grandma’s house? Rolling off the ancient pull-out couch and sucking down a cup of coffee made with grounds frozen since the Carter administration? Washing your entire body with a single bar of soap under a shower head level with the height of your nipples?

Many English words stem from Latin.

But did you know there are Latin words that ended up in English two times - in two different forms? These are called doublets.

Over the next days, you'll see doublets in French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan, Galician, Dutch, and English again.

Fear of hurting others never convinces speeders alone because they're fundamentally selfish. I think everyone needs to be shown this image in schools. Going from 20-30 saves you 10 mins, going from 70-80 saves you about 1. Then explained to them the increase in fuel+car wear. Selfish reasons to slow

how many times do these things need to launch and fail horribly before governments stop wasting money on them
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) paid $18 million for a chatbot named Charlie, which the auditor general reported gave her team the wrong answer 66% of the time.

The chatbot's responses were found to be brief and lacking context, with only 2 out of 6 questions answered accurately.

holy shit, an accurate legal critique of LLMs. LLMs don't reason because they're just stitching together plausible-looking sentences indifferent to the content

New article inspired by the recent hoopla surrounding Karen Hao's book (re: water use). I argue that "no one should look to the EA community as exemplifying good habits of epistemic and moral conduct." Here's why: www.realtimetechpocalypse.com/p/how-effect...
How Effective Altruists Use Threats and Harassment to Silence Their Critics
How does the Effective Altruist community respond to critics? With threats and harassment. Even people who still call themselves "Effective Altruists" are afraid to openly criticize the community.
