Watching the public comment for Houghton County’s meeting tonight.

Three arguments against the resolution, about how they lost a transgender kid, or want places to be more welcoming, or how it just doesn’t matter and it’s a distraction.
On one hand it’s nice to see people against stupid county resolutions (only “mal and female”, spelling error included), but wow no one can follow instructions. Whoever‘s in charge of Zoom also has no clue what they’re doing and the audio is almost unintelligible.

"debate" gamifies politic conversation and replaces the actual stakes of the subject being debated with interpersonal stakes of clout and such. the demand for the version of civility that features in these conversations amounts to trying to water down even the interpersonal stakes

🚨NEW STUDY: Large media outlets systematically omitted mention of data showing corporate profits helped drive inflation, instead citing industry talking points.

Lawmakers then cited those media narratives to justify ending aid to the working class.

the thing i don't get about this is that sure, you're some groyper who thinks the posters look cool. but, like, you must know that the nazis lost, and they didn't just lose, they lost to the people they *deemed inferior*: a polyglot nation of shopkeepers on one front & russian peasants on the other
Oh look, ICE is copying literal Nazi recruiting propaganda again. The poster on the right is for the Volkssturm, the Nazi militia of older men and boys established during the final months of World War II.

a lot of leisure activities we associate with the elite, like skiing and golf, used to be affordable for working class people or even run as public services. my grandpa learned to ski as a kid in Utica NY, which still has a municipal ski hill and golf course!
Turns out Carter not only deregulated trucking, but also skiing, ushering in a glorious era of neoliberalism (and the associated indignities like $300+ lift tickets).

settler-colonial *is* a description. it helps us typologize colonial practices across history and see how they relate to each other. but by seeing history through that lens, one is led to the unavoidable conclusion that those practices are evil, and that they underlie injustices that continue today
If I were responsible for some of the stuff David Frum has done, I would also be against “Guilty History.”
