Interactions with the rest of the world (the term foreign policy implies too much coherence) seem to be being made by people whose understanding of the US's power and influence hasn't moved on in 20 years, and who grossly over-estimate their own competence. That's a recipe for disaster.

What we learned yesterday: nothing we didn’t know, if we were paying attention.

What we’ll learn this weekend: whether European leaders have been paying attention.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine was an ideational watershed. Ideas that have been proven wrong since then:

1) EU can't survive without RU energy
2) US will defend Europe; EU should not have military functions
3) Popper is wrong, total free speech is not a problem for democracies

Covid gave tech workers more power than they’d ever had before and they used some of it to push for better policies on racism and sexism and the bosses got so angry they decided to burn the world to the ground rather than listen to what they had to say
so much of the tech industry's right-wing turn has been because they believe that LLMs will free them from their employees, whom they hate.
I wonder how much of Elon’s fascism is driven by the fact that he fucking hates his employees. Like, SpaceX engineers might have some of the most liberal politics out of the industry, and I imagine it drives him mad.

Some people raised eyebrows when I started using the term the "Trump-Putin Axis" in the sense of reflecting the Axis Powers (Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Japan) in World War Two. Eve more 🤨 when I expanded this to the "United States-Russia Axis".

But here we are: the US-Russia Axis 🤷‍♂️

Once again I am leaving the Munich Security Conference in a low mood. Amongst all the noise, the US signalled their plans for Europe, so things are becoming clearer. But things are clearly not good.
This is what we now know, and what we have to do about it:🧵1/17

C'est encore pire pour les Européens que les accords de Dayton en 1995, pour lesquels la diplomatie états-unienne avait au moins mis les formes en faisant participer les États européens et l'UE à la conférence de paix puis signer l'accord en Europe à Paris ...
⚡️Europe won't participate in peace negotiations, but its interests to be considered, Kellogg says.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Kellogg mentioned the Minsk II deal of 2015, saying that it involved "a lot of people" but didn't work out.

Approbation? Serment ?

How Not to Die in a WWII War Movie:

1. Do not have a girl back home. If you do have a girl, do not have a Craftsman catalog and read it longingly dreaming of your future

2. Be mid in your desire to fight the enemy. Not rarin' to go (you'll die in the first skirmish) & not cowardly (poignant death)
