Rest in power Béla Tarr, an uncompromising filmmaker whose "slow cinema" films were anything but that. Intense, sometimes meditative, always absorbing. There will never be another like him.

China started wearing nice clothes, and making stronger friendships and cooler toys than us, all while playing OUR game. So we’re gonna set the house on fire.
It’s genuinely wild that the United States spent decades building an elaborate rules-based international order which de facto cemented its permanent status as the dominant global hegemon, sustained by ideology rather than might, and now is just blowing it all up for literally no reason

The media need to stop beating their chests about how powerful our military is.
It's a point of pride when your country has a strong military that keeps the peace.
It's a source of shame when politicians turn your strong military into an international armed robbery gang.

Calling public benefits “entitlements” is just the most contemptible right-wing trash.
No. No. No.

Punitive processes make narrowly targeted programs *less* efficient and *more* costly. Because more scrutiny requires more bureaucracy.

Punitive processes also make it *less* likely that people will get aid for which they qualify. Because of the roadblocks and stigma scrutiny creates.
