When I gather my thoughts about the year we're leaving, it's here I want to be, above the Côa River in Portugal, or else right where the Ribeira de Piscos empties into it, watched by two horses meeting face to face 20,000 years ago.

People need to stop saying, "This is not who we are."
This is exactly who we are, and we need to stop being that.

America, there's something you should know.

The top three kinds of books that young people (under 25) offer to sell me on Dec. 26 are:

- "Chicken Soup for the _____"

- "Oh, the Places You'll Go"

- Books of New Yorker cartoons

I'm just saying. Keep it in mind for graduations and birthdays, too.

1. We're a sovreign country & aren't beholden to U.S. broadcasting likes & dislikes.

2. We don't need "treachery" to make the American government look foolish - they do a good job of that by themselves. 🖖

"... but since they are Canadian, I would not rule out treachery ..."

Which writer at The Atlantic smeared our 🇨🇦 national character and citizenry with such a hostile, anti-Canadian smear?

And do they think 🇨🇦 must help cover up the Trump regime's actual treachery?

How is airing truth "treachery?"
The @theatlantic.com claims that Canadians will use "treachery" to make America and its media look "silly".
No, we are a democratic people who hate thugs and their pusillanimous enablers.
Deal with it.

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Today I’ve been thinking a lot about GenAI teaching us that writing — words — should not be laboured over. That time spent on words is time wasted.

This week I’ve stumbled upon discourse about using ChatGPT or similar to help with writing reference letters, obituaries, and family Christmas letters.

This year, Creative Commons became a UNESCO NGO partner and launched its Open Heritage Statement, two huge steps forward in our work to make culture accessible to everyone and preserve it for future generations. This momentum shows what’s possible, but we need you to keep it going.

I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking.

Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals…

All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it.

We CAN change things.
It’s crazy that people used to be able to just smoke cigarettes wherever they wanted

I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

Your Friday reminder that trickle-down economics is a cruel hoax.

Cruel because it's used by the super-rich to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.

And a hoax because nothing has ever trickled down.

Fuck all of you saying "this is inevitable" or "it's here deal with it" or even "it's fine"/"it's not a big deal". Be antihuman on your own time. This is a moveable needle. It's ruining lives (mine included already), ruining the environment, ruining art and creativity, isn't needed and isn't wanted.

Unbelievable. This would be a terrible blow to American science, writ large. It would decimate not only climate research, but also the kind of weather, wildfire, and disaster research that has underpinned half a century of progress in prediction, early warning, and increased resilience.
Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.
