Hello Masto-peeps who use screen readers!

I just learned that I need to put alt text on URLs for more accessible PDFs, but -- what should it say?

I am formatting academic citations that include a URL, so all the information about where that link will take you is in the text. I don't want it to […]

Over the weekend, I wrote to the nearly 200 members of c18.masto.host who joined us in 2022-2024 and then stopped logging in over a year ago. I've gotten several emails back saying that after committing to Bluesky, social media as a whole came to feel like a bad idea. It is my hope that keeping […]

Does anyone have a recommendation for a lightweight LMS that I could run in my own VM?

Ideally a nice UI that is mainly for a simple set of three or four subjects for an internship program.

It would be nice to have a set of questions at the end that could be manually reviewed.

Over 40 years, we were collectively told to give tax cuts to rich people.

And we were told that if we did that, wealth would trickle down and everyone would be better off.

Over 40 years, pretty much everything got cut to fund these tax cuts.

Schools. Hospitals. Public housing. Public […]

So my changedetection.io instance flagged that a bunch of LoC linked data downloads had shrunk from several gigabytes to several megabytes, which made me super suspicious but it turns out they've finally got around to gzipping and linked data formats are all extremely compressible. 🤷

$WIFE, and her mum, and my mum, were at Twickenham yesterday watching the final of the Women's Rugby World Cup as part of a sellout crowd of 82,000.

Today, none of them can speak very well, and they are now rewatching the match on BBC iPlayer 😂

To be frank, I’ve become extremely frustrated since the acquisition because now the environment combines the worst aspects of a make-it-up-as-you-go small company with the worst aspects of a faceless corporate overlord. I love my coworkers, I don’t love the general approach to projects and […]

Thanks everyone, I was able to get a job lot of 6TB enterprise hard drives from Aspire Sheffield (they very kindly threw in 2 extra so I have 8 now!). Every drive bay in my home is now occupied so it's time to start thinking about how to house those 2 extra.

Spent some time this weekend running […]

Time to tap the lossy jpg of a vintage Tumblr post again.

Do not punish the behaviour you want to see

I mean, it seems pretty obvious when you put it like that, right?

But how many families, when an introvert sibling or child makes an effort to socialize, snarkily say, "So, you've decided to join us"?

Or when someone does something they've had trouble doing, say, "Why can't you do that all the time?" (Happened to me, too often.)

Or any sentence containing the word "finally".

If someone makes a step, a small step, in a direction you want to encourage, encourage it. Don't complain about how it's not enough. Don't bring up previous stuff. Encourage it.

Because I swear to f cking god there is nothing more soul-killing, more motivation-crushing, than struggling to succeed and finding out that success and failure are both punished.

If I get time I might do some analysis of how many posts have been made with the #gemconference2025 tag over the last few days on each of the main social platforms. My hunch: LinkedIn is most active, but it's still relatively quiet.

So my main question is "why aren't museum educators more […]

The UK fiscal year for tax purposes runs from 6 April each year to 5 April the following year, and the reason for this is of course extremely British https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_taxation_in_the_United_Kingdom#Start_of_tax_year

I picked up this old Cisco 3800 series from the side of the road a few weeks ago. It's interesting to poke around with, figure out how to get a serial connection to and poke around the Cisco cli, but not much practical use. Now I'm wondering if I gut it how […]

I'm looking for a smart plug or something that can monitor the power usage of my home server over the day/week. Lots of these are available but many seem to be tied into cloud services and I'd like to keep that data to myself and use open tools to visualise it.

Any recommendations?
