Remember, the Online Safety Act was passed by a Tory government in 2023. It only just went into effect. If Labour wanted, they could safely wash their hands of the whole mess and blame conservatives.

Except now they *are* the conservatives.

I’m deadly serious by the way.

The UK fiscal and economic situation is fucking dire right now and that is in large part because government policy is permanently tilted towards the needs and preferences of retirees.
Because no one wants to say no to the baby boomers.

why am I paying someone to fetch me a bucket of water when I can get as much as I want at the free tap it came from
I think one thing that annoys me about generated articles is that if I actually wanted an AI to give me a rundown about a topic, I would rather use a model directly and trust my own capacity to formulate a prompt.

My default response with your webpage is that I'm looking at noise.

I think people not in online fandom world are liable to under estimate how significant an expression of women's sexuality this is nowadays. It'd be like banning books with topless Scotsmen called The Highlander's Hidden Heart or whatever in the 80s/90s.

At least 30 writers have been arrested across the country since February, a lawyer tells the BBC.

(If the “future scary paradigm” is so bad, should we push on LLMs instead? I offer some concerns there too—e.g., the reasons to feel good about alignment of today’s LLMs seem to be getting less and less applicable over time!) (9/10)

"Greedy physicians expand clinic, want to treat and cure another 21 patients."
“Plan to build 21 senior apartments […] decried as ‘only greed’”

The dehumanizing idea that new housing is “developer greed” and not, you know, a place for people to live that will benefit those people.
New England land-use policy has a sort of primal evilness that is unmatched anywhere else in the US. A toxic combination of "I got mine" selfishness, xenophobic stupidity, and presumptuous "I should have a say in everything" busybody culture.

AI alignment folks: Is there a consensus on the relative difficulty/importance of:

(1) Making AI understand human values
(2) Making AI care about human values
(3) Making AI succeed at what it tries to do

(Or... is there a consensus that this is the wrong way to think about it?)

Poor BlueSky team. The developer goals are like: "Let's make an open social network with an open API and data interop."

Meanwhile BlueSky's users are like:

"CAN THE FEDS SEE MY BLUESKY POSTS?"
"No brother. We are safe here, the Nazis are on the other site."

"Russia is prepared to fight forever"

No it's not. It just says that.
The Economist’s Oliver Carroll reports that Russia threatened to capture Sumy and Kharkiv and said they’re ready to fight for years, even forever.

Russia never wanted peace, doesn’t want peace, and never will.

no plant species or bacteria or anything ever gray goo'd the planet? not once, with an uninterrupted carbon substrate and limitless solar energy? hard to believe so i'm taking it as more evidence for quantum immortality
